This may not interest most people and some may find the implications abhorrent, but this is something that I've been saying will (and hoped would) be possible in the future:
Stem cells can become 'normal sperm' (http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993700)

i thinki you'll find my comments highly relevant and intellectually stimulating regarding this subject. I read the thread this morning, but fail to see how it has bearing on the possibility of creating germ cells from stem cells.
Germ cells are random mixes of our own code and essentially limitless in quantity. Since they are based on my own code and a child is determined by the mixture of two different codes, I don't see the value in the question asked.
Granted, I may see it differently given a different point from which to approach the question.

why is it that no one can tell when i'm being facetious/sarcastic?
i must be doing something wrong.
anyway, (and being serious now) - is it now amazing/borderline disturbing how technology and espeically biotechnology has taken us to this new frontier of tinkering w/g-d's creations? look how far we've come: from bands of neanderthal-like hunters and gatherers, to an globally integrated society that can do amazing things! if you sit back and think about it, all youcan say is "wow!"
BUT, is this good or bad???? well, ask the guy who just got a liver transplant, and he'll say "good", but ask someone like a priest or housemom, and they'll say "bad" (warning: generalizations have just been made)

When one reads, the tone of what's read is primarily dependent on the reader and, as everyone knows, it is what leads to misunderstandings.
Regardless, I agree that all you can say is "wow." I find myself saying that a lot internally when I go on my mental meanderings on the train or walking or the like. Is it "good" or "bad?" I don't think anything is inherently "good" nor "bad;" it is our handling that determines whether something is for the positive or for the negative.

msray - can i admit something to you? i recently have befriended two gay dudes thru a mutual friend, and i find it totally interesting and cool to be friends w/them. when i think of htem, i am reminded of your presence on this board. now, my q is: i can never decide whether to say somethign like "guys, i think it's so cool that me a straight guy can be friends w/a gay guy like yourself".
it's like defying the notion that i shouldn't see color or gender or race or whatever. i see that they're gay, but i like being friends with them (which in fact, has nothing to do with them being gay) actually, really one of them in particular i have really befriended - his bf is cool though and i am friends w/him too, but i really really like the one dude. we're totally on teh same wavelength.

It's alright feeling that way and to be honest I feel the same way in reverse when I befriend straights. It shouldn't matter and obviously it doesn't here, but it doesn't mean that you can't think "I think it's cool that gays and straights can be friends in this way despite the current state of opinion in the nation/world."
Eventually as our own prejudices and baggage are erased, we won't have that reaction.
