How much weight would you give this (http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2003/05/14/idol/index.html) article?

Why must everything be made into a black and white issue? I whole heartedly feel that Clay is a tool and if he were ever made American Idol, it would be an embarrassment to our country. If this puny carrot top is the kind of guy you would like to idolize, then you need your head checked.

I think it's a valid question given the structure of the show, but of course the question could be rendered moot tonight and/or tomorrow.

Well its kinda a dumb accusation to make dont you think? Does the writer of this article really believe that all whites vote for whites and blacks vote for blacks? I mean this is truly assanine if I do say so myself.

And in the end, does it really matter who gets voted to be the "American Idol"? I think its pretty clear that if you got wut it takes, ur gonna make it whether u get the most votes on this show or not. Kimberly Caldwell, who isnt even in the top 3, already hosts her own show on SportsNet. Frenchie, who got booted from the show, already has a starring role in Broadway's Rent. And the author's shining examples of Tamyra Gray and Justin Guarini, also have exemplary careers...so what point is this writer actually trying to make other than he is a complete fool who just wanted to stir up some drama by writing what he did?

I don't see why that is so assanine to say. I don't think it's a stretch to see that people gravitate (in the whole country) toward what is similar. There are people who for all intents and purposes don't "see" differences, but I think it is naive to believe that that is the norm.

You make several good points regarding the subsequent career boosts for the "losers," but in the context of the show, they are irrelevant. The purpose is not a boost in careers, but to be the "American Idol" in the eyes of the audience. Why else watch the contest?

I read this article more as an observation than an accusation; regardless, tomorrow will determine if this article was complete bunk or a point of further discussion.

Its not to boost thier careers? I thought it was. Lets not use the term "American Idol" too literally, because after all, which one of us really "idolizes" Kelly Clarkson? Its a popularity contest is all.

Their careers are not a concern from the perspective of the audience which isn't you nor I, but a younger demographic who is actually voting and actually idolizing.

I think I would have misgivings if you were worshipping Miss Kelly ...

Negative criticisms with brains (http://www.salon.com/ent/letters/2003/05/15/idol/index.html)

Some quotes:

If either Clay or Ruben wins, it will be a victory, odd as it seems, for the teenager demographic who actually calls in to vote on the show. Neither of them fit the "idol" mold. I am shocked, and am *very oddly* proud, that talent has been the obvious deciding factor in this show -- not race and, more importantly, not beauty. Jones' premise is actually being proven incorrect by this show.
Eminem hit it right on the nose in his hit "Without Me": "I am the worst thing since Elvis Presley/ To do Black Music so selfishly/ And use it to get myself wealthy."

So why do we scoff at the idea that any time "America" picks a pop music idol it'll probably be white?
Instead of chastising the reality TV world for picking the elfish Tom Jones wannabe over the spherical Luther Vandross wannabe, you should be commending these shows for stripping everyone of their dignity, regardless of color.

turns out its the reverse, theyd never show the black man losing to the white guy on national tv, u have no way of actually seeing those votes, they could say whatever they want

I know it's after the fact, but I just read this post now. Obviously, it has proven to be trash and the writer is a friggin moron. First off, Justin Guarini is half black, so I don't know what the hell she's talking about blacks not making it. Second of all...Tamyra should have never been booted off, but is her voice really better than Kelly Clarkson? Now, that's a matter of opinion, but I personally don't think so.
