Looking to buy some turntables but don't know if it will hold my interest long enough to drop 1500 bucks on Technics. What are a recreational set that will get the job done without devoting serious capitol. I was looking at the Gemini's set which is like 400+ with a mixer. A liitle feedback would be appreciated.

this shit aint cheap so if youre not willing to shell out some dough, youre prolly better off getting a cd player and a decent mixer... it all depends on how serious youre planning on getting with regards to buying vinyl & equipment..

what I suggest (if you can).. is find a buddy that has equipment...
and see if he will let you play with his stuff... then after a few months... if you feel ur into it... drop the loot for the equipment...

all of the above are great pieces of advice.
i would try to hit up my friends with equip b4 i bought anything.
personally, i started with a crappy mixer and a dual cd player.
it was a great choice for me (esp since it was much easier to get stuff on cd). i was able to determine if mixing was for me b4 spending a lot of $ on vinyl.
ive since added gemini direct drive tables and an efx500. yea, the TTs dont hold a candle to techs, but it gives me a chance to spend money on records and to upgrade down the road.
good luck!

Some great advice right there. However, if you want to practice in the privacy and comfort of your own home and you really can't afford the good equipment, I'd advice you to get the Gemini PT 2000's. I was lucky enough to have a friend donate a pair to me, and I've found them to work just fine. Although, I do have a habit of blaming my 'sh*tty a$$ gemini's' for my f*ck ups, and wishing I had tech's :disappoin We all need something or someone to blame though, right :silly When you feel yourself progressing, you'll fork out the loot for tech's.
djshop.com are selling them for $169.00 each. Not a bad deal! Or try ebay.com... more often than not you'll find a great deal there.
Good luck!!

you guys should visit your local sam ash... they usually have a few used turntables lying around, which work fine and they sell them for cheap..

Thanx for the replies def some good advice. I have always been into tunes but never thought about spinning. I bought the MP3 mixer ATOMIX on-line 3 weeks ago and haven't put it down since. Not 2 turntables but def resembles two cd's and a mixer good program, this is when my interest started..

i started with atomix too. imho, it gives you a good understanding of track selection and mixing in general, but beatmatching really is much more difficult to grasp.
you may want to buy an external mixer and 2 sound cards, run each one into the seperate channels and mix that way.
plus, it gives you a chance to buy your eqip one piece at a time rather than forking our $1K up front.
thats what i did when i got my 1st mixer (bc i was still waiting for my cd players) and youll find that its a much better way that just mixing on your computer. it is MUCH more hands on.

Can you suggest a good one sound card and mixer? Would each channel be hooked up to a mp3 player? How would I hook the mixer to the computer? Thanx again fro the advice

i went out and bought a cheap sound blaster sound card for $20.
from there, get 2 wires that go from the speaker out puts of the sound cards to the rca inputs on the mixer.
each channel on atomix will play thru a seperate channel on the mixer. for example the song on the left will play thru one channel on the mixer and the song on the right will play thru the other channel.
this will give you a much more hands on feel and the eq (bass, mids and highs) will be much much more accurate.
this will also give you the ability to monitor the incoming song before you are actually playing it too.
i started by borrowing a $100 crappy gemini mixer and it worked great for what i needed. you can prob pick one up much cheaper on ebay or used at guitar center/sam ash.

Thanx bro I appreciate it..
I searched for sound cards and found 1 for $25. Do I have to open my dell up to put the sound cards in? It's cool that I can still use ATOMIX to record and the external gemini mixer enabled you to hear the beats instaed of visually matching up on the pulse thing on top...

yea, you gotta open the computer but its very easy.
but, if you do use an external mixer you can NOT record your mixes unless you use an external recorder (stand alone cd burner, minidisc recorder, or tape deck).
if you do wanna continue to record your mixes, my suggestion is:
dont use an external mixer and buy a 2nd sound card and use that to monitor the song that your gonna bring in thru headphones (plug one sound card into your speakers, and plug one into headphones). this is what i did and i made some AWESOME mixed cds!
it might not be a bad idea to just buy the mixer and use that when your playing around and just mix the other way when your ready to record.

If you use 2 sound cards and connect the ATOMIX to the mixer why could'nt you just record off the ATOMIX using their recording feature? The only flaw with ATOMIX is you have to match by seeing the beats of the 2 songs but with a external mixer like you said you have to listen to match. How would you play 2 diffrent songs if you eliminate the ATOMIX program? Would you use 2 seperate MP3 players? then how would adjust the pitch?
Thanx again

you cannot record using atomix and an external mixer bc to use an external mixer you need to go to options and change it from soft mixing to hard mixing (or something like that, i havent done it in a while).
if you were to try and record, that would mean that the 2 soundcards would output to the mixer and then you would have to run a line out from the mixer back to the computer and that wont work.
as for mixing mp3s without using atomix.....i have no idea. the only reason i know this stuff is that i did it with atomix a couple yrs ago. it works great, and you can use the pitch control in atomix to adjust the songs if you opt to not use the beatmatcher-thingy.
if your looking to record mixes, i would suggest that you buy an extra soundcard (thats what i did). use one to play thru your speakers (which will be recorded) and use the 2nd soundcard to monitor thru headphones (which will not be recorded).
it might be helpful if you goto the options section and ck it out. it will show you the different combos (mixers, soundcards ect).
you also might want to read the help section, that is how i found out abt all this stuff.

Space is more of an issue then cash. I just moved in with my girl into a 1 bedroom apartmant that is already crammed up with a 53 inch tv, a computer, a entertainment center and treadmill the tables would have to go on the kitchen table..
But how much is he asking anyway:D
