June 9 — Hamburgers, soft drinks and cakes could be hit with a “fat-tax” in a bid to combat Britain’s growing levels of obesity, doctors said Monday. Also, researchers said they have found evidence that male babies who grow slowly in their first year have lower incomes in later life. Plus more health news in brief.

I wonder if this would have as much an effect as they would like given the current change in view and recent research regarding the harms/benefits of fat contrasted with the harms/benefits of carbohydrates.
Rather suddenly, the low-carbohydrate meme is moving beyond the health & fitness culture into the mainstream. Atkins is pretty strong meme and its presence is slowly showing on food stories on the TV news. This morning a low-carb bread invented (http://www.ny1.com/ny/Living/SubTopic/index.html?topicintid=4&subtopicintid=19&contentintid=30881) was highlighted on NY1.

I heard about that Low carb bread, I believe Atkins actually has his name on it, $10 a loaf.

So they are raising prices of fast food, thinking that people will choose "healthier" food instead? I'm curious of the exact motive because it seems like they just want money by taxing something that is "bad" for you. What is taxing it going to do for the people?
And since when does soft drinks have any fat, let alone saturated fat? I know it's like pure sugar that turns into fat, but I hope these people have their facts straight (I realize the article is vague).
