U.S. officials have reportedly asked a pair of embarrassing Americans to leave Argentina: the Bush twins.
Twins mania - including tabloid tales of nude hotel romps and serious security lapses - has gripped the media in Buenos Aires, where Jenna and Barbara Bush celebrated their 25th birthday over the Thanksgiving weekend.
ABC News reported that U.S. Embassy officials "strongly suggested" the twins cut short their trip, but they refused.
The embassy called the report "false."
"The embassy welcomes the visit and has provided close support and cooperation," it said in a statement released to the media.
The headlines dominating TV and newspaper coverage in Argentina involve the theft of Barbara Bush's purse, including her phone and credit cards. It was swiped from beneath a restaurant table, despite the presence of Secret Service agents.
There were splashy photos of their appearance Sunday at a big soccer match and breathless coverage of their dinner out when a fire engulfed a nearby building.
An Argentine tabloid magazine reported the First Twins were spotted running nude in the hallway of their hotel - a tale the .hotel staff denied, according to ABC.
U.S. officials were reportedly steamed the twins were upstaging newly arrived U.S. Ambassador Earl Anthony Wayne.
The White House would not comment.
ABC also said security was so lax that a network producer, Joe Goldman, was able to wander up to the twins to chat in the lobby of their boutique hotel, spotting them through a large plate-glass window Thursday.
He reported that Barbara was typing on a computer and Jenna was sitting on a nearby couch. No one stopped him from approaching them.
An Argentine TV station reported that Barbara had left to return to the U.S., but that could not be confirmed.
