View Full Version : Benitez...
Good or Bad? AND why please...I think he will be a GOOD set up man for Rivera. He just has to learn to work under pressure...making him a set up man relieves some of that, I hope :)

he is better than what they have now but i still don't like the trade.....jason Anderson is young and has great potential. Benetiz has done nothing to prove to me that he is a big game pitcher

Both...obviously a little concern.
Bad:
He can never gets the job done in the big game. We all know that. Take it back as far as the 96 playoffs. He was an Oriole (Cal Ripken #8 Ruels). We all remember the Jeffrey Meyer incident. Benitez was pitching when Jeter hit that "home run" hehe
Good:
- He throws gas 96+
- should be able to learn a lot from Rivera and the other guys in the yankee pitching staff, escpecially Mel Stollemyer (sp).
- Every time a player goes from the Mets to the Yankees or has played on the Mets prior to playing with the Yankees they have done great. Examples.....Doc Gooden, Darryl Stawberry, Robin Ventura, Todd Ziele, and David Cone (couldn't remember anymore). Surely the list goes on. If this trend continues we will see Benitez mowing down guys in game 4 of the ALCS with a 2 run lead in the 8th.
- Rivera: Saves him a little. With the addition of Benitez, he can be the set up man. This will hopefully keep Rivera away from the 4 or 5 out save.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT. Let me know what you think.

i agree. Benitez certainly has not lost his velocity. Still throws hard, I just don't think he's hitting his spots. Probably cause he has no confidence. A set-up role puts him out of the spotlight. I think he'll be a great set-up man for the yanks. Good short term trade for them.
LMFAOOOOOOOOOOO....thats all I got to say..I should bring back all your Benitez hate posts but then again, hes yours now so youll have nothing but love for him..Typical New Yawker

ummm....ventura has done shit as a yankee. He is old, slow, and can't do anything but hit pop ups. if i see him strike out one more time with runners in scoring position, I may kill myself.....and Cone and Strawberry played for other teams before coming to the yanks....
Todd Ziele is batting .190.....He sucks.
your also forgetting some more players who did nothing, when coming from the mets (Raffy Santana, Niel Allen, Tim Burke, Elster, Dave kingman, tim leary, jose manzanillo, bobby ojeda)

ventura was a great pick up for them last year. You can't even call Zeile a Met...i think he played for just about every NL team.

Buc,
you gotta realize how solid Ventura is at third base for the Yanks. He's a perfect pick up after Brosius retired (a little early if ask me). But, anyway....He's going to a winning organization. Something about that Yankee mistique. We can only wait and see.

I agree with Buc, not a good trade plus I never forgave him for that brawl with the Yankees.

His defense is not nearly as good as it was 3 years ago.....He is average now.....and I am sorry, the man is batting .239 and last year he batted .269 and that was with a monster first half....I bet he is batting in the low .200's with 15-20 HR's, and 70 RBI's since last years all star break......He needs to go......Plus he has made a ton of errors
JohnyKel

ventura never hit for avg....he hit over .300 maybe 1 or 2 yrs over his whole career....fact is thats hes a very respectable .270 lifetime hitter w/ 6 gold gloves...he had 90 something rbi's last yr (20 more then jeter)...hes always been a clutch hitter and a good rbi guy...hes as solid a 3rd baseman as you can have, but yankee fans arent happy unless they have the best of the best at every position on the field...
Unclebuc

Bro....Ventura had 60 rbi's at the break last year.....
He is washed up.....
he was a great 3rd baseman...i'm not arguing that.....I am saying he is done....He is old, tired, and slow

im washed up.....ventura was always slow....except on the tarp during a rain delay...

Here is Ventura's numbers as a yankee.....
2002
141 games .247 avg 27 HR's 93 RBI's 23 Errors 101 k's
2003
81 games .238 avg 9 Hr's 37 RBI's 5 errors 57 k's
here is his numbers from last year Pre and post All star break.....
Pre-
.263 19 HR's 62 RBI's
Post-
.227 8 HR's 31 RBI's
So since last years break Robin is hitting....
.232 17 HR's 68 RBI's
STICK A FORK IN HIM......
HE'S DONE!!!!!!!

i agree with you he is done. but you got to respect the guy for his glove and for the fact that he can get hot. i know you can say anyone can get hot but you would expect it more out of a guy going out of a long solid career.
he knows he's done, he'll prob. be gone after this year. the question is who's next to man the 3rd base line at yankee stadium.

I never said I didn't respect him.....
it wouldn't shock me to see the yanks make a run at tejada and move him to 3rd.....Nomar is also a free agent and george would probably love nothing more than to 1- try and steal him from boston or 2- drive the price waaaaay up for boston to keep him.

1- Tejada would NEVER sign with the Mets
2- Reyes is their shortstop of the future
3- they just got a real good 2B prospect in the burnitz deal i believe
4- The mets are rebuilding, they are gonna keep slashing payroll and thenm in a few years start signing free agents
5- Never say never with the yankees
6- I don't see them getting Nomar but I can see george making a run at him much like Boston did with bernie a few years ago.
7- jeter is the yankee captain and they would never move him. nomar and tejada are both better ss though but in a big game there is no one else I would rather have over there.
8- Evil nick can suck a dick. i'd rather ventura than David Bell.

9 - I wish i went to Tottenville
1 - why not? NYC is the largest market and the mets have the $ for him.
2 - maybe, fielding is shakey. id rather have Tejada and Reyes be the 2B of the future. Im an impatient NY'er and am going to have a tough time "rebuilding".
3 - im not ready to call Victor Diaz a real good prospect yet.
6 - F George
9 - i understand

it has nothing to do with the Mets having money and everything to do with the mets being a shitty team.

I'll take Bell and his 200 batting average over Ventura. Guy is one of the best defensive 3rd baseman.
