I just looked at pictures of myself from this past weekend and all I can say is Wow. I have turned into someone that I cant stand physically. I am one fat mess. I havent worked out since November because well my wife was pregnant and I was helping her towards the end and now that the baby is born and now 4 and half months have past there isnt any time in my day to workout, actually the time I could work out I want to be with my son.
But now I am just discusted with the way I look. I never been an Adonis or anything but yikes this is bad. I probably way about 240 and have a size 38 waist, two sizes away from a 40. I should go on the biggest looser.....LOL
I realized that the most time I have for going to the gym at 5 AM till 630 AM, then come home take a quick shower take my son to my mother in laws and go to work for 8 AM that is 3 days a week anyway, I am off on Mondays and my wife is off one day a week as well. So with that being said, how do I take the greatest advantage of this time? Do I do a full body workout 3 days a week and then cardio on the other 3 days a week? Do I go back to training two body parts a day with cardio? I just dont know and dont want to be that guy that cant keep up with their children because he is to fat.

I know poor me, just looking for some advise.

Kick yourself it into gear Glen :booted .... If not for yourself then for your child and wife. Start eating better and take at least 30min to exercise at at gym or even your house while your kid watches daddy get back into shape. You want to live longer for them don't you?? Just do it! Don't think!

get your diet in check first IMO. that is the key of all dieting down.. IMO i would not do total body workouts just yet. My reasoning is cause you wil start to rebuild muscle under your fat which in return will give you the illusion of actually getting fatter.. IMO i would sugeest like i said get your diet in check.. hit up cardio with lite circuit training to you get your body back on track.. then if you feel things are going good start to train if you have time.. BUT dont over train like ex. 1hr of cardio then weights thats too much IMO..
good luck bro, you'll get back there!!

exactly bro, you don't have to work out more than 30-40 minutes TOPS,

thatsa a reasonable amount of time to break away from the fam. if anything thats you time. a small investment for a large gain, for you for your wife, for your kid and for your lives together. good luck.

I agree on the eating, as this is the basis of staying lean.
but for the work outs,

i totally disagree.
doing full body workouts will increase his muscle faster than antything else, more muscle less fat, ....maybe the day he goest to the gym hes gonna look bigger, but honestly he needs to strip fat, nothing strips fat like full onslaught full body workouts intertwined with cardio. not seperate. if you do full body workouts with a cardio element to it like cross fit,and actually stick with it, youll be in the best shape of your life. but its a bitch of workouts, but really thast waht needed to see profound change, the 8-10 rep, 4 sets, 2 body part routines is really a thing of body builders on stage, or usually people who are overweight and really never get to where they need to be. its cause of that type of training, no one sheds real fat doing a set at a time resting in between. then doing cardio, above that NO ONE can sustain that routine day in and day out over the long haul. you can sustain a workout that constantly challenges you.

Drastic times calls for drastic measures.

usually you can't see kick ass results unless you completely kick your own ass.

Hi Glen!!! Congrats on the little man! He's adorable.

I second the CrossFit suggestion. I started about 4 weeks ago and have dropped a pant size but gained 3 lbs. I have a long way to go but I feel like I am finally getting there instead of running in place. But the best part is that it fits my busy schedule. I'm usually in and out of the gym in 40 minutes or less and I use one of the rest days to do an extended cardio session at home on my treadmill. I plan on starting my son on this kids program as soon as it warms up.

The hardest part of new parenthood and the schedule is eating right. Either you're not getting in all your meals or your eating the first thing you get your hands on which isnt always the best thing. The grocery store salad bar is my friend (but I make my own dressings). Also, I cook or package a lot of my weekly food on Sunday (measure and bag oatmeal & powder, boil chicken & eggs, cut up veggies etc). Don't forget your shakes and keep some bars handy...not the best option but better than junk.

But most importantly, enjoy him because he'll be grown up playing hockey before you know it!

Wow allot of good comments and I appreciate the feed back. Yeah I also got some test results back from the doctor and it seems I have some fat attached to my liver, whatever that means. So this is a little more serious now.

I am going to look into this crossfit. Is crossfit a workout or a place you go to workout? I seen videos and it looks like a place that you have instructors helping you. If so does anyone know of a place on the North Shore in MA?

All I know is I need to do something immediately, I did yard work yesterday for 3 to 4 hours and today I am sore as fuck. I have never felt my age till now.

As far as diet, today so far I have eating reduced sugar oatmeal (Two Packets) with a scoop of vinalla protien powder at 0630. I also took a fish oil capsule to rasie my good cholestrol levels (doctors orders) for lunch I brought a turkey and provolone sandwich with roasted pepper Hummus, a fruit salad with strawberries, grapes, pineapple, and watermelon with two table spoons of plain yogurt over it.

Check out www.crossfit.com and go through the FAQ it will tell you everything you need. The folks here are pretty helpfull too. You can do it at your regular gym and if they don't have all the equipment you need there are usually modifications.

Be careful on ordering sandwiches out. Most of them are loaded with extra fat and calories. Try making your own lunches.
It sounds like your pressed for time to. It has to be hard having a new baby, wife, work and a home. Why don't you buy that jogging baby carriage and take the baby out with you? Maybe buy some weights for the house. And go food shopping for healthy foods. Get rid of the garbage in your house.

Good luck..you can do it!! What you see in your mind, is what you can achieve. Don't give into temptations..mind over matter.

-GLEN

Hummus is great for you! Low glycemic carbs and fiber in the chick peas plus good fats in the olive and sesame oils. But if you like mayo smart balance is a good alternative. However, hummus on bread might be a bit too many carbs depending on how many you are allowing yourself per meal. Also, if you are eating bread while dieting make sure its whole wheat, high fiber and not just plain white.

Hummus with fresh cut veggies is a good snack.

I hate Mustard, except honey mustard.

As far as bread I use Low carb whole wheat from Petridge Farms. The bread on my sandwich is really the only bread I am eating all day.

All this week I have eaten:

Morning 0630 - Cinnemon Roll Oatmeal (Reduced Sugar)
Scoop of Vanilla protien
Dunkin Donuts - on my way to work Large coffee light with skim milk 4 equal

Snack 0930 - Kashi TLC bar Cherry dark Chocolate (4 grams of Fiber and 5 g of protien, 120 calories)

Lunch 1200 - Turkey and Provolone on Wheat bread and Roasted pepper Hummus
Whole made fruit salad (green grapes 20, sliced pineapple, Strawberries, and watermelon with two table spoons of plain low fat yogurt)

Snack 1500 - Banana

Dinner 1800 - Usually eat at my mother in laws because I have to pick the baby up anyway, last night was chicken and a potato and veggy cassarole thing that is cooked in olive oil.

Let me know if I am doing something wrong here.

I agree. The biggest thing that stands out are the snacks. Add some protein in there (can of tuna or some hardboiled eggs) and maybe add a 3rd one after dinner because if you eat at 6 or 7PM and don't eat again until 6AM thats a really long fast. Easy ways to add good fat into your diet are nuts and nutbutters (all natural). A spoonfull of your favorite nutbutter is great for killing cravings or carying you over in between meals or late-night.

Also, add in some green veggies.

I would take out the reduced sugar oatmeal. I think you are better off having some egg whites w/ whole wheat toast or english muffin. Those reduced sugar oatmeals have artificial sweeteners which aren't good for you. We had a nutritionist at work recently who also told us that artificial sweetners are not the answer cause they are very sweet tasting, so they make your brain think you are eating sugar. But then your insulin doesn't react to it, so it like throws your body out of wack and can make you feel more hungry or crave more sugar.

Glen Tha McK.
04-17-2008, 12:12 PM
So what should I do about my coffee? I currently am putting 4 equals in my large, should I just use sugar?

Also would regular instant oatmeal be better, I know it tastes better that is for sure.

-GLEN

Funjen

if you really want oatmeal I would say buy Kashi or trader joe's brand, both are very good and all natural. Even quaker adds in artificial ingredients! When I eat oatmeal I add some whey protein powder and ground flax seeds, give you the extra protein and fiber to keep you full. Trader joe's sells oatmeal with protein already added in it, its called oatmeal complete.

Not sure what to tell you about the coffee cause I don't drink it. Can you have a coffee with one pack of real sugar?

Also, the fruit salad and yogurt is a lot of sugary carbs. You need more fiber to balance the meal, and those fruits are no high in fiber. You might want to switch to eating a regular salad w/ balsamic vinegar, and maybe having a piece of fruit (like and apple) or small portion of fruit salad for dessert. And after having fruit salad and yogurt, its probably not best to follow with a banana for a snack cause its going to spike you insulin back up again. I would try string cheese, cottage cheese or veggies and hummus (or peanut butter) for an afternoon snack.

i'd stick with the oatmeal over toast (even wheat bread contains high fructose corn syrup FYI)...
Quaker now makes an Organic Instant Oatmeal.... 100% whole oats no sugar or artificial sweetners...( as was stated reduced sugar oatmeal has plenty of sugar in it just not as much as the regular)

I wouldnt opt for brown sugar...because its still sugar...
and you arte probably better off with a couple splenda (sucralose) as opposed to equal (aspartame) witht he coffee....again i would avoid the real sugar....

for a snack if you are going to do yogurt make sure its plain and add a real piece of fruit with it instead of getting the fruit in the yogurt (its all processed with sugar additives)...

stay away from processed food as much as possible...

as far as your body reading the artificial sweetners as sugar...theres been a lot of debate regarding this recently (inthis forum as well - i dont recall the post)...and for as many reports that say artificial sweetners are just as bad as sugar there are those that dispute it....
