My parents re-did their entire house when they bought it. Re-doing the kitchen was the most fun!....Go to Home Depot to start (& other places), get some ideas, prices, etc. If you can, try and do the whole thing yourself (if yer handy)...Good luck :)

I put in granite counter tops, stone backsplash, refinished the cabinets and put in a new sink for about 10k. I then bought a stainless steel stovetop for 1k & a stainless steel refrigerator for 2k makes a huge difference. I used home depot for everything, but next house I get I'll definitely pay a little more and have a local contractor do it because I wasn't impressed with the job they did.
The first step is the cabinets, and then you do the countertops and finally the cabinets. Also you can put granite countertops in your bathrooms for real cheap and it looks real good. I'll take some pic some time this week.
Extra Lighting is always a good investment too. And wood floors definitely make the place great too.

we redid our kitchen about 2 years ago
the key is a good contractor, which i have yet to come across
i fired our guy about 3/4 of the way through and finshed most of the work myself (installed sink/dishwasher/mouldings/microwave above stove)
i think the total was about 54,000
we absolutely love it though since its attached to our family room and we basically live in those 2 rooms

yeah $54k is a lilllll bit more than i was looking o spend. lol
i knwo a boat load of contractors, my dad can do anything and do it very well we'd just have to be sneaky about it. i have to see what im working with over there more closely.
