babe ruth
barry bonds

bonds will probably break ruth's records and finish with better numbers, but he will never be the player in comparison to the league the Ruth was. I'm pretty sure one year Ruth had more homers then the whole league combined. Bonds has longer seasons, shorter fences, juiced balls, conditioning coaches, personal dietians, trainers and diluted pitching. The comparison isnt realistic. Not to mention Ruth was an awesome pitcher too, he had 20 wins and still hit 58 homers. Ruth was and still is the greatest player to ever play the game, whether or not our generation got to see him play. If you want to compare Ruth to someone, Tiger Woods is the only athlete right now that dominates his sport the way Ruth did. And the summary of it all, how many rings does Bonds have?????

babe rutyh played in a league where they didnt let blacks play so IMo that more watered down then today league and bonds may not have a ring but look at what he did in his 1 world series appearence. those number were incredible, its a shame his bullpen couldnt hold the lead.
and all the conditioning and training coaches work both ways for pitchers and hitters
yes ruth was a good pitcher but barry bonds is a great defender(8 gold gloves) and he stole bases(400+ steals)
its a close arguement and there will never be a right or wrong answer

first off, there was no golden glove when ruth played or he would have had a bunch of those too. And although the leagues were segregated, there were also alot fewer teams, which meant the talent levels were a lot higher. Here's the comparison, the year Bonds hit 73 there were 3 guys above 50, the year Ruth hit 58 and won his 20 games, the had more then the whole league combined and only one other person(2nd place) had in double digits at 15. I think you mistaken if you thing that arguement is close, how many stadiums can u say Bonds Built?

and bonds plays in a league where all the best athletes are playing other sports like football and basketball.
chris79

the numbers dont lie, barry bonds will be better then ruth in every single offensive category once he is done, and just imagine what his numbers would be like if he wasnt walked 2 times a game

WHOS record did he beat for walks?

he will pass ruth in walks by the end of the year then have the walks record by some time next year

how can u say it was more watered down back then, then it is now w/ all the expansion teams
now.a lot of players are only playing on this level becuz of the amt of teams
chris79
09-06-2003, 03:55 PM
because they only let white people play when ruth was there thats alot worse then having alot of teams, half those crackers wouldnt have been in the majors if they let latin and black players into the league

were in a different era,the numbers cant be compared,i could go on and on w/ reasons, but steroids and juiced balls have
a lot to do w/ the #'s being put up now.
i.e. brady andreson hits 50 hrs in a season,#2 luis gonzalez hit 60 or so ...
chris79
09-06-2003, 04:06 PM
those guys were good for a year or 2 barry has been great his whole career, maybe he just started poutting up huge hr numbers but the man has always been a top player in the league
chris79
09-06-2003, 04:07 PM
if bonds was around in ruths era he wouldnt have been allowed to play
chris79
09-06-2003, 04:11 PM
and besides steroids the number being put up now are higher because the average player is stronger and faster now then they were back then

when griffey and thomas were putting up #'s in the early 90's bonds was not even in the spotlight, b4 the juice he never hit 40 hrs and was considered a consistant player.

bonds was just never in the spotlight like griffey or thomas because bonds has always been an asshole to the media its just now he has excelled even more so they cant ignore him

who bonilla, terry pendelton, all the hitters were in the AL.bonds lost an mvp
to pendelton, that says enuf of what he was going against.
chris79

i cant think of any off of my head you know im burnt you fag, pendelton was a good player anyway the man put up good numbers for a few years(even though he didnt deserve the mvp)

so are you trying to question how great of a player bonds is? because i can understand the arguement about ruth and bonds, but to say bonds is not a top 3 player of all time is crazy

i dont think hes in the top 3 hitters let alone players.
I'd take ruth, mays, and williams before I'd take bonds.
Again how many rings does he have?
chris79
09-06-2003, 05:54 PM
people keep bringing up rings, bonds plays left field and bats 4 times a game he doesnt pitch and play all 9 positions
and ill repeat the man had one of the greatest world series last year what more can he do?
TheHipHopBillGates
09-06-2003, 06:08 PM
perform at that level more often or he could be like ruth and pitch the game too. funny how you blew off my answer to the top 3 hitters too.
chris79
09-06-2003, 06:10 PM
i didnt blow it off, i stated before bonds was the greatest and i even stated that if you dont think he is the greatest then he is atleast in the top 3, you dont agree with me what more can i say? the numbers dont lie
chris79
09-06-2003, 06:12 PM
i would also like to know where would you rank bonds?
TheHipHopBillGates
09-06-2003, 06:13 PM
first of all ruth would have hit a 1000 homers if he was playing now, mays was a better hitter and fielder, and williams numbers is probably the best contact/power hitter ever who was hurt because he missed 5 years due to world war 2 and korea, and a shorter schedule. No one will ever hit 400 again.
chris79
09-06-2003, 06:16 PM
what you say is mostly true except the ruth thing but then what would happen if bonds wasnt so feared and didnt get walked 2 times a game?
chris79
09-06-2003, 06:16 PM
mays was a better fielder not hitter
chris79
09-06-2003, 06:17 PM

and how do u think it came to be that it was ruth's walk records that bonds was breaking? If ruth had a 162 game schedule, the records would have been higher.
chris79
09-06-2003, 06:20 PM
you think babes fat ass could have endured playing a 162 game schedule? be honest

Bonds has already hit in more games then Ruth and hasn't broke his record, doesn't hit anywhere near Ruth's average, is only a better fielder because the fields are smaller, and I'm not even going to talk about Ruth's pitching stat's. Bottomline, if Ruth wasn't a pitcher the first "5" years of his career(2 20 win seasons) where he never played over a hundred games. His records would be untouchable. and that last comment is just week, if he played a 152 games what's ten more games?
chris79

talking about how many games they played in is bs if that the case then mark mcgwire is the greatest hr hitter ever
good job pulling up the career totals though

mcgwire was probably the best hr per at bat hitter, but thats about it. Ruth was the greatest all around player period.

to each their own, its all a matter of opinion, what counts is that they are both great and both have left their mark on baseball
i have another topic i started that we can argue about cause it seems we dont like to agree on sports lol

Ruth was a better player than bonds. Ruth played in the dead ball era and was in terrible shape, yet was the best player that ever lived.
Bonds was shit until he started taking juice
