Here's my review:
At best I thought Party Monster was OK, but I didnt hate it..maybe because I was there and lived it so it was a great treat to see a movie about the beginning of my partying in NYC..maybe because I already know the story, maybe because I have sympathy for the producers that didn't have a great big budget to work with..who knows..
Party Monster never really felt "like a party". In the club scenes, no one seems to be having any real fun and for all the easy sex, there's not a single sexy scene.
Mac gave a mediocre performance as Alig, he failed to capture the REAL darkside, the charisma, and the obnoxious charm..I liked Seth Green a little more, he had us all laughing with his antics as James St. James and I believed him. They didnt have as many party scenes as I would have liked, wayyyy too much of them hanging out in Micheals apartment, probably because it was cheaper to film..but they didnt even come CLOSE in their "delivery" of the true magnificence of his parties, the bewildering ensembles the club kids would turn out and the almost horrific experience to be in the Limelight at one of his fierce galas. The movie never really got rolling, it was too flat, and lacked any depth, left you feeling empty which is the complete opposite of what really went on. I would have preferred to see that live footage they have of Alig and his parties..that would have been awesome..and did anyone buy Caulkin being able to kill someone? Alig was someone that people followed to their own destruction...I wouldnt follow the person they portrayed to the deli..They didnt even come close to showing us how Alig's drug addictions warped him to the point where reality was the dream...
You can wait for the DVD, and even then you still wont get it..I think the books Disco Bloodbath and Clubland serve as a better illustration of this story.
The first time I walked into the Limelight in 1990 I was in COMPLETE awe, speechless, my eyes must have bulging out of their sockets damn I was so fucking impressed and excited. I left wanting more and more..it was bewildering and euphoric. No way did this movie capture that.
