NEW YORK, Sept. 8 — The first publicly funded school in the United States for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teen-agers opened in New York Monday as a handful of protesters rallied across the street.

THERE WERE also demonstrations of support for the Harvey Milk High School. In front of the building, people cheered and held up banners such as “God made us Queer” on the first day of classes for the school named after a gay San Francisco politician assassinated in 1978.
The school, which for 20 years was funded privately and had just two classes, is now bankrolled jointly by the city education department and a gay rights youth advocacy group, the Hetrick-Martin Institute, a first for the United States.
When city officials announced in July that the school would open in the new academic year in September along with others for New York’s 1.1 million city-educated children, critics in the United States and overseas said creating a special school would not solve the larger problem of homophobia.
“I am offended because this school is only for a particular sexual orientation,” protester Reuben Israel said Monday. “I say it is discriminating ... these people say ’accept us for who we are’ but don’t accept anybody else.”
Some held up banners like “Sodomy It’s to Die For” and another that said, “Death Penalty for Fags.”

SAFE HAVEN
School principal William Salzman said the school was not segregationist. He said it provided a safe learning environment for children who had been physically or emotionally abused in other schools because of their sexual orientation.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the teachers’ union support the school.
“We are very proud to have them here in a safe, nurturing environment,” Salzman, a former Wall Street executive who has recently worked as an assistant high school principal, told reporters. “Some may say it is segregationist, it’s not. All the students are here voluntarily.
“There are schools where some things may be taking place, but we can’t change the whole world, but what we can do is work with one child at a time.”
He said over 70 students are enrolled so far in the revamped school, which will specialize in computer technology, media, art and culinary programs in addition to the city school curriculum. The city spent $3.2 million to renovate the building in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village neighborhood.

I think he is attempting to use gay terminology to describe his feelings about a gay high school. If he liked it he would have tried to say it was fierce.

Damn beck , what was that supposed to mean? i was just saying that gay/transgender, etc teenagers get put through some sick torment in HS that other teenagers dont. I just dont see why it bothers people so much that these students are being given an evnironment to learn in that allows them to feel more comfortable, Instead of them having to walk down the halls being tomrented for being gay or to go through life holding in a secret & living in the closet - theyre around other young people in the same situation as them.

lol... your wound up huh????

I was just making a point... as far as them getting picked on and shit I think putting them in a seperate school only makes it as if they are not normal... I dunno forget it.

Kids who are straight but have gay parents and kids who are straight but are thought to be gay (so they are blessed with the same consequences as those kids who are actually gay) have been admitted to the school and are not barred from applying.

Although Gays do go thru some rough times, what about every other student that gets bullied because he/she doesn't have the look, or has their own look that is different from everyone else, and gets bullied everyday. This isn't such a good idea in my opinion , not because they can gain the acceptence they deserve, but because its not solving the problem, it's only making room to create more.

Although I dont agree with a separate school, if it's for the safety of them, than I understand.

Quite true, they are welcomed at the school as well.

I would point out though that this school is for those students that have had problems in the traditional school setting because they could not go through a normal day without incessant harassment from students and/or school staff (which happens more than expected). In time, though, it is hoped that the school's need diminishes.

I agree that it doesn't solve the underlying problem, but for the time being I don't see how this will further the overall societal problem so long as the program remains relatively small and narrowly targeted.

I think this is, as many things we provide, pass, and live in, an experiment.

We were all bullied -- or were bullies ;) but what gays went through in school were beyond that. It was more than physical but (even worse) psychological. So what is the big deal if they have this school for themselves? It doesn't hurt the rest of us, it's MUCH better for those that wish to go there. We, the heteresoxuals are NOT losing viable partners to another school. I hope this one works out for the better for everyone.

Some things I want to clear up for the uninitiated and this is not directed to anyone in this thread, just thinking out loud.

1. A school, or any environment that caters to homosexuals will NOT make true heterosexuals gay. The homophobia only stops with education.

2. Milk school will NOT drain substantial amount of funding from other schools. The funding is a small fraction, under 1% of the entire NYC Board of Education budget.

3. Homosexuality can not be cured because it's not a sickness. Throughout evolution there has been mutations. Some are detrimental to the individual or a group, some are not. Homosexuals are people who love the same sex as the rest of us heterosexuals love the opposite sex.
