Seriously haha, they couldnt find people that can actually do a pullup without swinging there body up for this video? I would like to try this too but I would never be able to keep count. When I do burpee pullups I loose count once I get past a certain point cuz im goin so nuts. :chuckle

haha thats what i thought as well when i first saw it, but it turns the pullup into an explosive movement, which is what we all want, no?

nah never heard of it

wats the reasoning behind doing it that way

the swinging I would imagine is horrible on your shoulders,

I prefer hanging and then doing them with just str8 negative weight, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr warrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Yea, im like seeing both sides here. I can sorta see how you are using more of your body in a fluid motion but im having a hard time really justifying it more than just momentum. If I was doing lateral raises and I was swinging my arm up instead of using all muscle I would be labled as having bad form so why is this any different?

just jess

kipping pullups and pullups are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT exercises.

honestly, just because they are kipping doesnt make it "easier", its actually very difficult to get that technique down.

The reasoning behind use of the Kipping PU:

1. Power output is increased. You are now moving the mass (your body) over the same distance, but at a significantly faster speed, thus decreasing the time it takes you (cycle rate) to complete the move. This increase in power will lead to an increase in work capacity, which is the holy grail in CrossFit, and should be in almost everyone who trains program, with the exception of competitive bodybuilders. Olympic weightlifters do them a lot for power development.

2. The Kip is an integral part of gymnastics, in particular, the Uneven bars. In order to get montmentum and even begin to swing on them, you need to be able to kip. It's the equivalent to learning how to incorporate the knee-bend into a jump. It's the transmission for force.

3. It's highly functional. Anytime you need to get from a hanging position to a supported position on an object, you can kip to get up there. For police and soldiers this could be required on them on the street or the battlefield. I also use it when I want to get out of the pool and don't feel like using the ladder. :jerk

Definately a good way to get a muscle up happening.

ok I understand all of the positive things posted about it. But the fact still remains it does NOT replace a regular pullup. You are using less pure muscle force that you need when doing pullups. So do them both if you wish, but do them both for there OWN reasons. This is more of an overall body motion, pullups are straight up back (and some arm) strength.

That was where my misunderstanding on what they were doing lies.

if you keep doing pullups, eventually they will get easier and you will be able to go faster, which will naturally lend itself into the kip. if you can bang out 30-40 kipping pullups, its almost a guarantee you can knock out 15-20 strict, so there is a carry over.

You are completely right. I say this to all my people. They have to be recognized for their own benefits and purposes. I still do deadhangs on the regular. Especially lately because my shoulder is effed up, which I think is partially do to poor Kipping PU form.

There is carryover adaptations (transferability), however, between Kipping PUs and Deadhang PUs like D said.

speaking of carryover, ring dips to parallel bar dips, wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

1) FASTER reps
2) DEEPER reps
3) STABLE reps
4) HEAVIER reps

i fucking love the rings

Yea I remember they guy in the video saying that its pretty easy to start to learn cuz you will probably naturally start doing it if/when you can bang out pullups very quickly. ok ok good stuff.
