A bunch of my old bud's from Lindenhurst (on LI) take this martial art. My friend Ricky is a black belt and considered a leathel weapon. I find it kinda cool that if he's in a car that gets pulled over he has to tell the officer that he is a leathel weapon. Yup the kid is a registered leathel weapon. He has trained with Shammrock and Royce Gracie. I think it is an amazing art and love to watch these types of fights.
This art is a style of Ju-jitzu founded by Carlos Gracie. The system developed by the Gracie family has been undefeated for over seventy years. it was designed specifically for a person of average body size and physical ability to use body mechanics and leverage in a effective way in order to defeat bigger & stronger aggressors. The methods are easy to learn and require no special co-ordination skills.
The applications of the Gracie system skills and techniques have allowed the Gracie family and their students to defeat opponents more than twice their size and strength. i am sure you have heard of the Gracie name from the "Ultiment Fighting Championship"... Royce Gracie is a grappler, but if you ever seen him he is tiny and has still managed to win many of these championships.
There are a bunch of Gracie Acdemy's in New York and alot on LI. (I think like 10 total) If anyone's interested I can definantly recommend a few let me know :)

My old friends, Nick and Matt Serra have a dojo in East Meadow, LI. Last I heard they were #1 and #2 in the state, but who knows now that it is so damn popular.

Thanks Kev! I knew you'd like this post. Ever since I was a little girl I can remember watching the UFC with my dad and uncle. I was always so intrieged (sp?) by all the different styles of fighting. But it was Royce who always stuck out b/c he was so damn little and always won. I feel now that the UFC has gone a little down hill and isnt that interesting to watch anymore, you know? Maybe thats b/c alot of these kinda underground styles of fighting have become sort of mainstream now... do u agree?
either way I would be honored to train at your school when you open up your own. And maybe me and matt can come see you fight sometime i think it would be kinda cool.
I used to go see my boy Dan box golden gloves a few years ago that shit is off the hook too!

ill take u guys to the reality fights were having in Nov the night of the NAGA its gonna be hotttttttttttttttttttttttt
joey... nick and matt are sick!!! i dont particulary like there attitudes (giving opposing crowds the middle finger- disrespectful) but there great at what they do
i hate there boy Drago who runs there huntington school hes a douchbag!!!!
after a fight both sides should simpley shake hands and thats all theres no room for being an asshole in the sport
kel UFC has become commercial but its because it got soooooo big ....i like pride more now but i wish they fought in an octagon not a ring
the octagon is HOT
K1 is good too but theres no grappling they use 10oz gloves but the fights are crazy

I've been looking for a good dojo, but it seems all the good ones are in ny. I've been leaning towards akido, just because I'm more interested in hand and foot movements then grappling.

speaking of BJJ and grappling i just got tapped out about 5 times
im in the worst fucking mood! i fucking hateeeeeeee losing!
my sensei just embarassed me for about an hour!
as far as aikido goes it is extremely hard to learn it involves intercepting peoples kicks and punches but at the same time turning ur back toward them without giving them ur back, its like a big circle that you use ur bodies energy and ur opponents to control him
its very traditional i prob wouldnt recommend it if u asked me
however if u choose to go with aikido theres a good place in northern blvd in bayside
or theres a TSK in bayside but there sorta expensive to be honest but the level of instruction is amazing....two 4th degree instructors and one 2nd degree
