Is peanut butter bad?

I've always known peanut butter as a protein and a healthy food option. Generally for breakfast I'll have peanut butter on multi grain bread because I don't like cereal and not a big egg fan. Both the nutrionist at my gym and my trainer said it's fine.

Last night I was talking to my cousin who does these iron man competitions and what not and he said peanut butter is actually bad and that I'm consuming too much sugar so I won't lose weight. Then he also told me that I eat too much butter nut squash and that's it's straight carbs but when I look at the nutrient value of butternut squash it doesn't seem that way. Is he right??? Or is he just a cracker like I hope and think??

certain peanut butters do have a significant amount of saturated fat per serving...it's good to watch your saturated fat intake....there are peanut butters that have a lower content though if you look for them....

its not bad for you, BUT you should watch the serving size and as housemuzek stated the fat content. Thats prob. the point of your cousin as well if you are dieting!!:hmmm The serving size of PB while your dieting down should be like 1 tablespoon of PB. is that the amount you are putting on your bread?? you would be better off putting it on a bannana.. if your dieting down.. seems to me thats the point he may be trying to get across??? no??

just make sure it is organic natural pb
it is good for you..even better if its unsalted
take a couple tablespoons and eat with a sliced apple before the gym :heart

peanutbutter is not bad per se and it does contain healthy fats...but eating it everyday might not be the best thing if your goal is weight loss
yes theres protein in there but the combination of PB and the bread your carb intake is far outweighing your protein IMO
natural PB is better

I do eat light natural PB.

I dunno...I don't really trust him after he put his daughter on a crazy diet when she was only 16! She lost a lot of weight yes but she gained it all plus some back.

The nutrionist said because I'm eating it in the morning I have the whole day to burn it off so it's not as bad then say eating it at night before bed.

your nutrionist is an idiot if he says "its ok to eat like that in the morning you have to whole day".. yea thats a great attitude to be telling someone whom wants to loose wieght.. granted the PB sandwich is not that serious BUT he if your paying a nutritionist he should be giving you better options of dieting... Sorry frankie, im just trying to help:giveup

JIF is bad
SKIPPY is bad
the NO-FRILLS in your local market brand is bad

SCHMUCKERS NATURAL PB is good, if you get it from a health food store, or even some places let you pick the peanuts and grind it fresh.... that's good

if there is oil separation.... good

the reason why the top brands i listed are bad is b/c they are hydrogenated.... which keeps the pb looking pretty and the texture consistent....

natural pb has to be stirred together.... and put in the refrigerator after openning.

schmuckers is my fav.... the ingredients are: PEANUTS and SALT :hungry

My Skippy Natural Peanut Butter ingredients are:

roasted peanuts, sugar, palm oil, salt

it says it doesn't use hydrogenated oil

I hate the whole stirring aspect of other natural peanut butters. Trader Joe's Peanut Butter only has peanuts and salt as the ingredients. Is it okay to just spill the oil out? lol

Ok so I found a store brand natural peanut butter by Kraft I dunno if Kraft is in Canada but here's the comparison....

Light PB - 80 Calories 1g of Sat. Fat 75mg of sodium, 5g of carbs, 1g of Fiber and 1g of sugar, 3g of protein. 67.5% of the calories are from Fat and it's 15% Protein

Natural PB - 90 Calories, 1g of Sat. Fat 3g of Carbs, 1g of Fiber and 4g of Protein. 80% of the calories are from fat and 13.3 are from carbs...and it's 17.8% protein.

I can't find the ingredients but based on the nutritional value is one really better than the other?

just grind your own if its that serious, but like some ppl mentioned if your goal is weight loss, combining it with carbs in a meal or just being relaxed about (not measuring it.. mind you if you weight it on a scale its less than 1 tbsp for 100 calories on avrg) doesnt seem like a good idea :giveup

it seems like your nutrionist more concerned about you having a "healthy lifestyle" or eating in moderation, or god konws, but not weight loss... just saying
