View Full Version : Calculating Total Daily Energy Expenditure using METs

All the TDEE formulas floating around the web use an "activity multiplier" to determine total calories burned in a day... but I want to be more precise. My confusion comes from the way METs are quoted. For example, walking is a MET of about 3.0. If I spend 5 hours a day walking (just a hypothetical to make the point clear), and I use the MET calorie burn formula [MET*3.5*(Weight(kg)/200)]*minutes of exertion, is the calorie burn calculated inclusive of the BMR calories burned for those 5 hours, or is it incremental? In other words, do I take my BMR and add to is all the other hours of activities I do at their respective METs, or do I need to subtract from the 24 hour BMR 5 hours with a MET of 1 before adding to it 5 hours with a MET of 3.0? Or should I just take off the incremental 1 MET quoted in the 3 MET for walking so that walking is only an incremental MET of 2?
