Pro Tools FREE edition is downloadable here (http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree/) but only works on Windows 98/ME since it is a little older and Digidesign hasn't spent the resources writing up a new free program for 2000 or XP YET.
For under $500 you can get Pro Tools MBOX which includes a small hardware interface and Pro Tools LE (Light Edition). Specs for this are here. (http://www.digidesign.com/products/mbox/), and you can buy it here. (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MBox/)
edit: Pro Tools LE comes with REASON now (called Reason Adapted a special integrated version of reason), a few other programs and a handful of plug-ins.

I never was a big fan of PC's, Mac is a standard and is ideal for graphic design and music production and sooner or later if you want to seriously produce quality sound, you're gonna have to switch, so b4 getting pro tools for PC, I would switch to Mac and then get whatever. I know it's a little bit costly, but it's the way to go and instead of investing this money into PC programs, and then switching and spending even more, my advice is to buy a Mac and pay off in small payments off you're credit card. And if you're looking for pro tools for Mac just ask, I'm sure someone will give it up. If not contact me.

I dont agree, maybe 10 years ago, but everything you can do with a Mac you can do with a PC these days. I know tons of producers and go to there studios alot and alot have switched to PCs since they are easier to upgrade and keep up with the changing technology. Why is Shawn Ink selling his Mac?

I agree. The gap that has been seperating the 2 has definitely narrowed. It's more about personal preference nowadays, and of course habit.
