Control Panel --> Performance and Maintenance --> Administrative Tools --> Services

within that dialog box is a Messenger Service. double-click on it and choose Disabled. this will shut off any messaging coming through your dsl/cable connection... yes, it's completely ok to turn this to disabled.

clueless about the links in yellow.

I'm pretty sure that just takes care of net messages (net send IP whateverbs text)

if you want something for free, download google's toolbar. that takes care of popups as well.

if not, go for tooto's zero popup. Highly recommended.

try downloading adaware version 6 from www.adaware.com then run a scan on your computer.

You can also use a browser called slimbrowser made by www.flashpeak.com. It has a great free built in pop up blocker.

Also remember in IE you can go to Tools | Internet Options, then press the "delete cookies" and "delete files" buttons (check the box that says "delete offline content").

After that you should have very little problems.
