and update 22-28 December, then back in NY for NYE, UGH
new years thre is pretty coo.l... u just find a way to get on a high altitude with a good view of downtown and u watch the whole island go batshit on fireworks... some parties offer such views too.
fireworks are mad legal. u can fire them at night while ur there on the beach... i seen tourists do it a lot
i recommend you book at least one daytime snorkel boat ride... the catamaran boat rocks the LEAST. they have open bar. try to book a SNUBA if u can. its a 25' oxygen line with snorkel gear off the boat. PACK BAGEL IN YOUR POCKETS and feed the fish. if u use any other bread it will come apart asap
a sunset ride with just open bar is cool for a pregame for dinner or casino...
windsurfing is fun too . it is at the end of the "high rise" hotels on the beach. u can book a group or single lesson then they let u go on your own and aren't too strict with the time. and if u go too far out the cme with a little speedboat to get you lol (oops) it's a great balance exercise. they take credit cards but i dont think they advertise thru hotels and such like the other activities.
as for finding fireworks.. cab driver can tell you. just ask for the one in "town"
if u click on the building closest to the flag, thats the marriot. don't go mid day! :sun

SOunds like fun, thanks for the tips.....I am staying at thr RIU, any good?
Is there stuff to do at night besides the hotels? From what i hear the resorts people like to just stay at the resorts alot
casinos at night are a big deal for tourists since most of them in this island are from the US... they happen to be in the hotels. RIU is a big hotel so ull be well accommodated. its at the beginning of the high rise strip...
i haven't tried to go out at night in years i wouldn't know off hand. the dutch intern population is growing i would ask them. probably where those boat rides go down.
too bad ull miss the full moon party on the 21st... its off this beach club close to the airport that only serves that one purpose. i caught it twice its sick.
its tough since ur going during a big family vacation week... its usually the first of like 3 weeks im there i just sleep and swim till im too sore to do anything at night.
just enjoy the global location. everything else is a perk and consider it luck :) the water isn't bathwater warm like puerto rico i love swimming in it. wear sunscreen the wind will trick u into not realizing ur burning

RIU is the nicest resort on the island... the most amazing pool.

well my average is 3 weeks since 1989 every year but one. my window is weeks 51,52,and weeks 1-4... my parents are kind enough to invite me to their timeshare. i am waiting on some transfer replies for school so i haven't booked yet.
so you go there for the sun and amazing water. hotels give luxuries like pools and massage spas... RIU's resort is pretty sick like she said... it's also very big and very new ... you def wont' be bored.
at night that strip of hotels that ur one, has a restaurant/shopping strip across the street that goes like 1/4 mile...
from what i hear the Mariott or Raddison have the best Casinos but just ask any cab drivers and employees and go to the most common answers. its such a small island its too easy to get around.
but i can't tell for sure right now what's good bc it changes.
2 years ago Holland started interning more students who study hotels and shit on 6 month stays. You will find them on any businesses that involve the hotels all over that strip. u can tell they aren't local. just talk to them they are nice... (at least to me) :buck
It's mostly US tourists... some south american but thats more during january.
one thing tho the beach on ur strip tends to get packed. there is a strip on EAGLE BEACH with less pple if u just wanna swim distance. it's in front of CHALET SUISSE RESTAURANT.a mile from you.
o and take the bus downtown on that cloudy day to do yo shopping.

How about jewelry/expensive watches, I heard that the prices down there are really good? or is it no better than the diamond district in Manhattan? Might pick myself up a nice watch if they have them down thurrrr

Prices are really good. They give like 10% off right off the bat, even on name brand stuff. Sometimes more if they know you arent on the cruise ships, they beat those people over the head. Got stuff from David Yurman with a nice discount and that stuff doesnt go on sale here.

last timei bought a nice watch like 3 years ago i believe it was tax free and like another 10-15% off... yeah u can negotiate. like forca barca said- make it be known ur not from a cruise ship and u are shopping at all the jewelers for the best deal.
go downtown- the hotles u are staying by are loaded with shops which have higher rent. negotiating is a bit tougher.
a store called boolchands is a place to start.
do NOT buy cameras or electronics prices were disgusting last i checked like 2 years ago. get what u need at b&h photo before you go.

Some info: I've been down to Aruba 4 times. Once I went over Thanksgiving,...I don't know about NYE. There were a lot of couples and families. I prefer the Hyatt. The Wyndham is old and the Marriot is too far. There were a lot of timesharers on Eagle Beach. The Hyatt on Palm Beach seems to have more going on. Their Casino is more upscale, they have Roulette and different games. Great pool/beach service. In town is most likely the place to be on NYE.
