What restaurants do you think are the BEST of the newcomers?
As far as ambiance, food & crowd? MUST be in Manhattan.
I am looking for a good recommendation - there is no budget - and it caNNOT be French, Indian or Thai. I'm also looking for something that is recently open, less than a year, would love something in the last 6-3 months.
I read about a Japanese/Fusion place in (I THINK) Soho, had a big white (could have been ice sculpture) buddah in the center of the room, was 2 levels with a lounge upstairs (looked off white/with cool lighting) and VERY new...I dont remember the name for the life of me
HELP.

all the restaurants in the Time Warner are pretty new and top of the line. There is a Sushi place (Masa), steakhouse (V Steakhouse), Thomas Keller's place (Per Se), all three of these are supposed to be awesome.

been to v steakhouse. didn't care for it.
i mean yeah it was ok, but as someone who has eaten at just about every one the the best steakhouses in nyc, it definitely pales in comparrison.
the space is very nice, great view and the decor is nice, but the food was average at best.
i went about 6 months ago and won't be going back. there are better steakhouses for the money, and i don't even have to pay for it....

there was a recent article on Jean George Vocheritian (however you spell it) how his restaurnats are not what they should be that he it on this spur to open soo many restaurnts without carin the quality of his food.
So the steakhouse i guess is a reflection of that - they said couple of years ago no one could top his food b/c he was pure genius but that in now he has been exchanging quaility for i guess money

this is the story with a lot of Chefs though. Look at Emeril and Rocco. Both used to be pretty well known and respected Chefs among the "Chef" and "Culinary" community. Then they let the fame and media get to them. They forgot about what was important and were out for money. Its hard to have both.

I am looking for atmosphere JUST as much as good food, a good space, we are not culinary experts goingon a tasting trip ya know, we wanna have a good time, with good drinks, in a new & trendy hot restaurant...the food just caNNOT suck hahahaha I want it all right? Think Spice Market without the Indian food lol

Megu is ok, it's in Tribeca. It's overpriced for what it is. It's haute Japanese cuisine and very pretentious. Kobe beef is ok there, then again, I've had kobe beef several times and i have never been a fan of that. Its worth a try but there is a better newcomer for Japanese food...Geisha...the guy who owns Serafina owns it...it's next door to hte one on 61st and maddy...i like it, hard to get a res though.
Geisha is probably your best bet. There is also Pace in Tribeca which is on Hudson i think? Very heart italian food...great pasta, very fresh. More lively. Geisha is more trendy though.
Speaking of Alaine Ducasse....has anyone been there? I've been meaning to hit that up but haven't had the chance...but I will post a review when i go :)

lizzy thanks!!
only thing is I loathe haute chinese..they ruin it! (IMO) hahaha i actually prefer the take-out
everytime I have tried a haute Chinese place I have hated it
Geisha and Pace sound promising! I'm going to look into them, at the moment I am also looking into Everything is Italian, Jeffrey Chodorows & Todd English's new place in the Meatpacking District.
:heart Serafinas :heart
I have a few friends that have been to Ducasse...and have heard its phenomenal, and worth the $$ and wait (for res), tacky decor though (lol)

I actually wanted to hear about these places from people "I know", I dont always trust the reviews...plus the main chef is always there when there's a mag person/reviewer there, I wanna know how it is on off nights.
