View Full Version : Birth Control Pill Question?
Is it riskier to have sex during that last week of your pills. Ya know the ones that dont really have a purpose..what are they sugar pills? I dont know...
OR is it riskier to have sex on a day that u miss a pill? (by accident of course) I know that if u miss a pill then you double up the very next day.
Am I making sense?
Anyone know anything about BC pills...thanks :keke

from what i have read and heard, the risk factor remains the same. the reason you have placebos is because you saturate (think this is the right term) your body with the real pills and this is just to balance you out. i do not think there is a risk

So technically u are still on the birth control during those placebo pills?

Yes technically u are....if u miss a pill of course u are at risk..during the placebo pills, no....except if its your first month... The placebo pills complete the cycle, they do serve a purpose even though they dont contain hormones like the rest of the pills. If u were to skip the placebos u would miss your period, in which case u could get pregnant.

Well if u skip the placebo pills and start a brand new pack THEN u wouldnt get your period. What if u just skipped the placebo pills and didnt start the new pack until the Sunday after like u were supposed to? U still arent at risk right?
Hmm...kinda confusing. So basically u are at more risk skipping a pill then having sex during the last week of the pack, right? :shuffle

Yes
And if u skip any pill, placebo or whatever, then u are at risk...Say u skip the placebo and u dont start a new pack right away but u wait til Sunday, I am pretty sure u can still get pregnant. Why would u skip them anyway? Its the first 3 wks of pills that drive me :pullhair the last wk is nothing.

Well some people dont have their period the whole week. I dont. Its usually gone by like Friday, Saturday. I never take the placebo pills b/c I feel like they are pointless. So If u skipped the placebo pills and had sex, u r at risk?

Lol..yes! B/c u never really complete a cycle. U must complete 28 pills to complete a full cycle, for some people it's 30, most 28.

actually thats not true
the last set of pills is not actually needed. its there as a place holder. so if you take weeks 1-3, then get your period, not take the placebo pills at all and then start week 1 when you would have finished week 4 - its the same thing as having finished a full cycle. thats the point of a placebo pill - its not actually doing anythig but placeholding the date
so technically you can have sex when taking the placebo pill just like when taking the rest of the pill - i dont think it effects your risk of pregnanacy. that is basically only determined by when you ovulate which if i am correct is the week before you bleed.

You ovulate anywhere from days 12-17 of your cycle, so it's actually a little earlier than what u said, but as far as I know, skipping the placebo pills is bad news. Most people would assume they arent necassary b/c u take them the wk u are supposed to get your period, so u wouldnt be having sex anyway (most likely, lol), but not everybody bleeds for 7 days, and even though those pills do not have hormones, my understanding is they are necassary to complete a full cycle. Skipping them and going onto the next cycle would mean u never really completed a cycle...and in order to get your body adjusted u are supposed to take them for 28 days straight.

b/c I always thought that its either 21 or 28 day packs. I never hear of 30 :shuffle

but u never HAD to take them. I wasnt sure.

Arin u were right ~ :hide
Didn't take the last week of placebo pills. Can I get pregnant?
Question: I have been on Ortho-tri-cyclen Lo for about 2 years. I had sex twice when I was on a light part of my period(towards the end)and I did not take the last week of pills(the placebos) because I heard they dont do anything anyway. My boyfriend ejaculated inside of me both times. I always take my other pills. What are the chances I could be pregnant?
Answer: Very slim. The placebo pills are just that -- placebos. There is no active ingredient in them. Their purpose is more to help keep you on your typical pill-taking schedule so that it's not hard to get back into the routine of taking the active pills after a week of not taking any. As long as you take all the active pills appropriately (as per package directions), and started your new pack of pills within 7 days of your last pack, you should be protected against pregnancy.

i would also suggest against skipping the placebo pills because (and this is speaking from experiance) if you go a week w/o taking them you might very well forget to start the new pack - thats why they are called reminder pills - and once you miss a day on the new pack is when you put yourself in risk

Thats a very good point lol...someone flakey like me would probably forget to restart the new pack also...besides....as I said initially, what's the point in skipping them? If u go 3 wks with the ones which actually make u feel nauseus, moody, etc...the last wk of placebos shouldn't be a problem.
I just made the mistake of starting a new pack this past Sunday instead of taking that first placebo pill..... :shuffle

Try not to skip pills. Yes, you can get prego BUT the % is very low.
Placebo week, you are not protected, use a 2nd form of contraception.

are u sure about that. otherwise what is the point of being on the pill? the placebos are so that u get ur period. the other pills trick ur body into thinking it's pregnant so that u never ovulate. if u never ovulate, there are no eggs to get pregnant. as long as u take ur active pills correctly, u can have sex whenever u want. that's y it's the pill, u can't get pregnant at anytime that ur on it, otherwise there would be no point of taking it. the point of the pill is so that u can have sex anytime u want w/o having to worry. u can't get pregnant at anytime as long as u take them correctly, even during placebo week.

I take ortho tricyclen lo as birth control every month. I do not take the last 7 pills because they are just sugar. so my question is if i have sex the couple days before my period when i am not taking the pills can i get pregnant or am i safe because of the pills?? thanks - Female 18y
Ali says - To answer your question, if you have not taken the last seven days of pills, then you are safe. The reason for this is because they are the 'placebo' which means, like you have said, they are sugar pills. However, pharmacists recommend that you do not do this regularly.
If you are unsure about the pattern of your pills then it's always a good idea to pop back to your doctor, sexual health clinic or visit your pharmacist where they will be able to chat to you about how to take the pills correctly.
Remember, using a condom helps to prevent unwanted pregnancies and helps to prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections. (STI's)
For visitors reading the above message please read the following:
Ortho Tricyclen is an everyday pill where the strength of tablet varies from the 1st to the 4th week. The answer I have given only applies to this specific pill. The most common contraceptive pill is the 21 day pill such as Cilest or Ovranette where all tablets must be taken in order for the pill to be effective.
If you take the contraceptive pill, please make sure you follow the instructions given to you by your doctor and also read the instructions given in the packet.

Things get complicated when u get into the technicalities of it, most sources will tell u it isn't necassary to take the placebo pills to avoid pregnancy, but it is always a better judgement call to complete a full 28-day cycle on the pills to be on the safe side. This isn't only regarding pregnancy issues, but skipping pills can lead to other unpleasant side effects like spotting, and skipping placebos means u never really complete the entire cycle of pills, so it's hard for your body to get adjusted. When it comes down to it, the placebo pills may not be necassary in the sense that if u were to skip them for a particular month your chances of pregnancy would probably be slim, but in the grand scheme of things I am sure most doctors would advise u against it.

Your chances of pregnancy may be slim, but if u are continuously skipping the last wk of pills, guaranteed sooner or later your cycle will be out of whack. Although only the 21 active pills contain the hormones which inhibit ovulation, the last week of pills exist to trigger menstruation, it's basically your body's way of telling u that you aren't pregnant. But skipping pills consistently leads to spotting, and can get confusing when u can't figure out when u have your period...It's safe to presume that doing this consistently for a few months will lead to irregular menstruation, and IMO it's more of a headache than taking 7 days of pills which don't have any negative side effects.
i heard if u dont take ur placebos you gain mad weight and become hideously fat and bloated...
i know a bit about this. whether or not you take your placebo has NO impact on your susceptibility to pregnancy, nor can it cause spotting or bleeding if you miss the placebos. doctors MIGHT tell you otherwise in order to SCARE you into taking all your pills everyday, simply so you get into the habit of taking a pill everyday. lack of compliance is the number 1 reason girls get pregnant while on birth control . If a girl is not accustomed to taking a pill every day (around the same time), she is more likely to FORGET when there are hormones in the pill. The placebos are only there for you to keep track of your pill schedule and to keep you in the habit of taking a pill daily.
so bang away....and lay a towel down during placebo week...then your golden!

Skipping placebos may not make u more susceptible to pregnancy but believe me it will cause irregular cycles and breakthrough bleeding in betw periods, especially if it's something u choose to do consistently. I did it once and my cycle was out of whack for a few months. Most doctors would advise u not to, mine did, but I didn't listen and I learned the hard way.

There's so many conflicting sources and opinions when it comes to this though, I believe they wouldnt exist at all if they weren't necassary, in either case, skipping them has caused problems for me in the past which is why I would advise against it, and most Drs would say the same..

Actually my understanding is ONLY ortho-Lo does the 21-day cycle, but i could be wrong...it varies depending on your cycle...if your gyno suggested 21 day as opposed to 28 maybe it is for a reason? But yes, if u wish, u can rearrange your cycle by switching to a 28-day pill...I would suggest Jasmin, although it's different for everyone but I switched from ortho-lo (horrible side effects for me) to Jasmin and couldnt be happier...no complaints except for a never-ending appetite...but I can't fairly attribute that to the pill anyway :pullhair

Lol yes...so i shouldnt be having sex anyway...I didnt wanna say that but yea :giveup
#1 is u skip a pill, you should take the skipped pill as soon as u remember, preferably before the next days pill..but if u dont remember until the time the next one is due then take the two pills together.
#2 the placebo pills allow your body to menstruate...under normal circumstances, without BC pills..the chances of getting pregnant from intercourse during your period is practically zero (more like 0.01 of a chance) so if your regularly on BC pills then your chance of getting pregnant during the placebo pills is somewhere around 0.001..so I wouldnt worry
#3 having intercourse during your period is absolutely gross and i suggest you reassess your morals and the respect you have for your significant other lol no offense sorry :keke

[ If u were to skip the placebos u would miss your period, in which case u could get pregnant.[/QUOTE]
I have been on birth control for about 7 years...I have never taken the placebo pills...never missed a period....and I have never been pregnant...they are just a sugar pills...they serve no important purpose.

the placebo pills are just what they are called. - placebo.. they have NO hormones and no effects on your body. they are just included in the cycle to keep us from breaking the routine of taking the pill at the same time each day
EXACTLY!!!!
