Anyone ever color their hair at home? I've always been weary to do so--and have always gone the salon route.

I'm thinking about just trying it out at home and going a few shades darker..and saving myself the 60 bucks id be paying more for a single process at a salon.

Anyone have any product recommendations? or products the reccomend i dont use?

:giveup

HM, if you are going darker, I don't see why not.

With lighter, and hilites it is harder to keep up with and going to the salon is a better idea so you don't mess up. To go dark, I use Wella liquid hair color & the creme stuff to mix it with. I forget what its called. Like Volume 40 or something?

Anyway, they sell everything @ Sally's Beauty Supply and should be no more than like $15. Good luck!

They have this new stuff that comes in black blonde and red shades and its only temporary....8 to 10 shampoos except its not cheesy like the old GLINTZ and shit like that ...its total hair color and its BOLD...I used it on the underneath part of my hair which is Cherry Red....but ti fades so often that I have to use the temp to keep it bright in between the salon visits.

Try that to see if you like how it comes out....then get the matchin perm color.

i bleach mine at home quite often.. only b/c i comb out certain pieces to bleach and i dont feel like having this big dialogue with a hairdresser telling her exactly where to do it .takes longer at home but my sister helps me so its sugar. i go to the hairdresser when i need a toner wash b/c she uses the type which doesn't have peroxide. she will fix any spots i fudged too... which is rare :snobbish

If you are going darker you should be fine...just make sure you get your whole head...lighter spots will stick out if your going more then 1 shade darker...

L'Oreal Preference has a great color....Soft Black...it's not too harsh. If you've never had Black hair before it's a good color to start with. True Black dye has blue undertones...the soft black is still more on the brown side.

Oh one more thing....if you have highlights make sure you dye them first. And do it in sections. I usually have a wide comb handy to brush everything thru...Have Fun! :)

if you are going to the beauty supply store to get hair color & you are going darker, only get 10 or 20 volume, i am sure the lady there can help you
30 & 40 volume is for going lighter & using it to go darker will damage your hair

also alot of semi-permanent rinses, when you go darker, hold like a permanent color & leave a nicer shine

I personally love when people color their own hair, cause when they screw it up, I get to charge out the ass to fix it
Not saying you will mess it up, but just be careful - i think going with a rinse would be less time consuming for you because it only has to be done every 6-8 weeks or so, there is no line between your natural hair growing in & your colored locks (its kind of like a faded band)

permanent color will grow out & if you dont touch it up every 4-6 weeks, you run into bands of different colors in your hair

also DO NOT RUN PERMANENT COLOR through your ends every time you color it, only apply to your roots

thank you for ALL of your advice ladies :heart

i wound up going to a beauty supply store on friday..and there was a lady there that helped me with everything i needed-- i got 2 tubes of L' Oreal excellence in darkest brown and a cream developer in a 10...applied it to the roots with the brush...then to the rest of my hair...25 minutes later...rinsed it out...and it looks great :WINK

its definitely A LOT darker than the color i had...but thats exactly what i wanted.. :agree

cece-thanks for telling me that i only apply it to the roots when i need to touch it up...i probably would have done my whole head when the time came :keke

so when i touch it up..i only do the roots? what about if the rest of my hair is looking a bit dull?

all in all im definitely going to keep this up at home...everything (2 tubes of color, one big bottle of developer, gloves, brush, cap) cost me 17 bucks...versus the 100 i would have spent at my salon to get it done...

I always dye my hair at home...the High Dimension haircolor is the best...you only have to leave it on for 10 minutes and the color stays the longest...the Garnier Nutrisse 100% color is also really good...dying your hair at home is easy and cool as long as you're going DARKER...if you're going lighter, you should def do it at a salon.

Jess, semi-permanent should be ok to refresh the ends or maybe even brown shampoo enhancers

I've colored my mom's hair for her a few times. Pretty easy. I would suggest not trying to do it yourself, though. Have someone help you, and make sure they get from the roots to the tips. Not pretty if you don't. Trust me, lol
