I feel like everytime someone has any type of psychological problem, whether it be depression, anxiety, anger, etc. they medicate it with prescribed drugs. I beleive this isn't necessary and curing these problems can be accomplished without medicine.

How many of u agree or disagree?

Drugs might take the edge off the symptoms, but a good psychologist (rather than a psychiatrist) and a patient who willing to face and dredge up the shit that gives them their issues is the best way to get past their problems. There is however times where a person is screwed up due to a physiological problem that needs medicating. But I am leaning toward the feeling that there is a lot of over-medicating goin on.

no doubt we are a prozac nation. and now, they're putting everyone on paxil, and these people will be on it for life. the serotonin crash they'd experience from quitting cold turkey after a few years would be too much. look at the people who get DT's from quitting xanax and die (granted, that's a hardcore narcotic).

but still, people who say are real depressed, if they're not treated, they tend to self medicate. i know i do.

prozac and paxil can be dangerously addictive, but there is so much hype about them that it's what most people in those situations want. zoloft ain't so bad.

I hear what you are saying..but I disagree. I worked in mental health for 3 1/2 years...soon to return to it...mental illness is not sufficiently treated through medication alone...it's the combination of medication, therapy, and structured activities that keeps people with severe and persistent mental illnesses stabilized. I myself get anxiety and panic attacks (as many people do in these times), I take medication for the acute symptoms and it really does help. I understand what you are saying though..they have a pill for everything and they try to push it with their dumb TV ads

I'm a social worker...I have a BA in psychology, I used to be a counselor for people with mental illness. I'm graduating from NYU in May, I'll have a master's degree in social work (MSW). Right now I work at a non-profit agency which houses homeless people living wth AIDS...it involves outreach work...not only do most of the clients I currently work with have AIDS, but they also have mental illness and substance abuse issue..a very difficult population to work with so I am looking to find a new job when i graduate!!

I hear you, but I too, disagree. Some illnesses are caused by chemical imbalances in the body that can only be controlled or cured by medication......certain drugs that your body can not produce by themselves to self-medicate. Although there are a FEW that I feel are not so much preventable, but controllable without medication...it does fuel a large part of the economy..not that it makes it right to prescribe just cause there is a slight reason to put someone on a medication.

I don't mean extreme cases. Because I am aware, that some illnesses are un-controllable and chemical in-balances.

I just mean occasional depression, anxiety and so forth.

I know that I have suffered from anxiety and panic attacks. However, I have never been the type to seek medicine for help.
My dad suffers from it aswell and he takes many medications to help supress them. I on the other hand have learned to mentally control them. But, maybe I'm just stronger at mind.

I just think their are other methods and they should be tryed first.

I think you are right too. My boyfriend suffers from panic attacks. They were so bad a few months ago, he went to the hospital a few times....finally they sent him to the psych. ward and put him on Prozac.....but now he can mentally control them and make them go away.......there are def. other methods taht should be tried first.
Bless you for having the strength to control them on your own, its not easy!!!!
