John Allan's
Allan's two Manhattan "clubs" look like barbershops by way of a boys-only Bear Stearns rec room. Each has a billiard table, several TVs, and a full array of young execs in crisp Brooks Brothers shirts quaffing Stella between hot towels. Try the shop's services à la carte; or, for $720, become a member and enjoy unlimited haircuts, manicures, shoe shines, and brewskies. A membership also bestows the right to keep a bottle—with your name on it—at the bar. A weekly trim suddenly seems like quite an attractive idea.
Services: Haircuts, beard trim, hot towel, massage (full body, hot stone), manicures, "sport" pedicures, billiards, shoe shine, coffee bar, Stella and Coors Light on draft.
Locations: 95 Trinity Place, (212) 406-3000; 46 E. 46th St., (212) 922-0361, www.johnallans.com

by the way is that Faith in the background?!?!

Eric Uvaydov
A second-generation barber, Eric Uvaydov is close(-ish) in age to the fashion editors and alterna-types who frequent his NYC shop, Neighborhood Barbers, but he's schooled in the old ways. While he can expertly shape an East Village Mohawk or massage the bed-head look to perfection, he's all tradition when it comes to a shave: hot towels, hot foam, and a straight edge, for the old-fashioned price of $8.

Victor Espinoza
A master of the straight edge, Espinoza (seated) gave his first shave in 1959 in Valparaiso, Chile, and he's been plying his trade at the Exchange, a six-chair shop in San Francisco's financial district, since 1974. Espinoza's Classic Shave ($18) is generous with the steam towels, and while many younger barbers like the Gillette Mach 3, Espinoza swears by the old-school blade. Customers do too—his busiest time is Friday after work, “when everybody's getting ready for happy hour,” he says.
The Exchange, 435 Pine St., (415) 956-9658

Shorty the Barber
Tattooed Shorty looks like he should be customizing a car or playing bass in a punk band, but he's one of New York's best barbers, and the public face of Sharps grooming products. Exceedingly mellow and defiantly antimetrosexual, he's now giving shaves at Woodley and Bunny. The new Williamsburg salon was opened by sisters Misha and Erin Anderson (one a former Rolling Stone executive, the other a Bumble & bumble stylist), but Shorty is all about the guys. "We're hairy people, man," he says. "So look clean, but keep it rough. And don't spend more time grooming yourself than your girl."

Pre-Shave: Someday, we'll all have hot-towel service at home. Until then, soften up that chiseled jaw of yours with one of these pre-shave products. From left to right:

The Art of Shaving Pre-Shave Oil, $22
ê-Shave Pre-Shave Oil, $19

The Art of Shaving, $22

Post-Shave: "Feel the burn!" As inappropriate at the barber's as it is at the gym. Any shave, whether in a leather barber chair or the business-class lavatory on a red-eye from L.A., should end with a soothing balm. Here, from left to right, are a few great options:

Clubman Classic After Shave by Pinaud, $5.99
Brave Soldier Brave Face After Shave, $16
Lab Series for Men Razor Burn Relief, $25
Zirh ERASE Aftershave Relief Tonic, $28.50
Baxter of California After-Shave Balm, $15
Geo. F. Trumper After-Shave, $60
ê-Shave Alum Block, $16
Nickel Smooth Operator In-grown Hair Gel, $16
Sharps After Shave Gel, $16

Equipment: Ask most straight-blade masters what they use at home, and they’ll give their (stubble-free) chin a rub and reply: a plain old Gillette Mach 3. But even though the best blade will only set you back a few bucks at the drugstore, you can still blow a bundle on the accessories. Names like Dior, John Allan’s, and Geo. F. Trumper all make luxe kits specifically for the Mach 3. From left to right:

John Allan's, sold exclusively at Barneys New York, and includes balm, shaving cream, and splash, $625, www.barneys.com
Dior Homme by Hedi Slimane small brush, $360, razor, $175, Dior Homme NYC, (212) 421-6009, www.dior.com
Geo F. Trumper razor, $90, shaving brush, $45, www.trumpers.com

alittle FYI regarding mens grooming

l'occitane makes the absolute best men's shaving products on earth.

ive been scouring the earth high and low and i have def settled on their shaving products, little to no irritation and the closest and best shave immaginable.

if any of the fellas suffer from razor burn this is the best 18 dollars you can spend.
