so we got a letter saying that we must remove our mezzuzah from our door frame by dec 1 or they will remove it for us.... you believe that??? :yourcrazy can they do such a thing??? ive never heard of such a thing.

find out what constitutes "your property" and common space. My condo board determines that my front door and doorway is my property, and shoud any repairs need to be made it is on me. THe common space property starts where the doorframe ends. (bastards... i have to repair my own peep hole... yes haha... peep hole :rolleyes:)

If they dont have a written doctorate dictating your property and common property, an easy / sneeky way to check where and what your responsibility is regarding "your property", is to inquire about a problem with your front door locks , peep hole, or hinges. If they state that that is ur responsibility to fix, you now know that the door and frame is YOUR PROPERTY and you can make any postings or modifications you want. Their greed to not want to fork out repair money may lead to a standing ground to prove them wrong.


Also contact the press about it... seriously fox 5 and the post eat this suff up... you will have the biggest jewish rally outside ur door within like 24 hours.

In my building there are a lot of indians and they have strange things hanging outside their doorways.... Sometimes I wish they would take them down but then again I dont think they are objects of religion and they are also a bit obtrussive. :shuffle

personally, as a non jew, i see no harm in having it up.

although, i bet you if people started hanging crosses on their doors, the jews would have a shit fit.

its an issue of it being in a public hallway thats why there's an issue.

it's not illegal. in fact, private entities are often free to discriminate religiously. This type of conduct however falls w/in housing laws set up by the federal gov't. The problem is, if the board bans ALL door decorations of ANY type, then the policy isn't discriminatory. Possibly you could get around this if you show the effect of the policy is overwhelmingly discriminatory (ie b4 the policy went into effect, the only people in violation were Jewish). I did some online snooping last night and this kind of shit happens. I have yet to see if it's been litigated in the courts.

update!

so after our lawyer spoke with them they decided they didnt want any jew beef and they will let my jew girlfriend keep the mezzuzah up!

It's not a big ass guady star of David, it's different. People put pumpkins and reefes outside their door should we take that down too? No, it's not about that. Don't make it seem like a one way street, it's not. People CHOOSE to put reefes up around Christmas, they don't NEED to, but this is in the religion so why subject that to something decided upon in a vote by people not in the position of authority to judge/vote upon those things. If they don't want things in the hallway, cool. But there have to be some moral/ethical value acknowledged in the situation, ya know? Like guidelines and side constraints.

on the outside or inside of your apt. If it's the outside, like the hallway, the building has the right to tell you what you can and can't have up. Probably in the building's by-laws. If it's in your apt, fuck them, leave da stuff up as long as you want.
