It works quicker than most diets if you can handle it. It's not the "healthiest" of diets, but you'll knock off the inches very fast. The problem is that if you don't stick to it the inches will come right back.

I'm not anti-Atkins, but I would never want to go as far as ketosis. I prefer just a high protein, low carb diet.
these fad diets should be used to kickstart a change in lifestyle. By itself, its worthless.

You gotta think past the word "diet" as it relates to a temporary or short-term process. You have to gear yourself towards a lifestyle change where you train your body into adjusting to the change of metabolism in your favor. Crash diets and quick jumps from one fad to another lead to miserable results.
40/30/30 is an old school diet which favors moderately active individuals looking to keep maintenance weight. But if you want results, 40/50/10 is an anabolic/fat-reducing medium for great gains.
Depleting the body of carbs is a no-no which leaves you sluggish and ineffective at power lifting due to depleted glycogen stores. If you're only interested in losing weight, do morning cardio on an empty stomach. You dig into your fat stores rather than glycogen. A combo that worked well for me was morning cardio and intense weight training at night. No complex carbs after 5pm and protein load at night.

I agree about the crash diets part, but they are good for quick short-term goals.
I realize that a lot of people do cardio in the morning on an empty stomach, which should make you rely solely on fat for energy, but what do you feel is the point that you start to lose muscle as well?

The body is geared up to endure up to 1 hour of physical exertion before reaching a catabolic state.. for some individuals, it may be even longer or shorter but I generally go for no more than 30 mins of cardio to err on the safe side.
Then at night, you can perform up to one hour of weight training to use up the glycogen stores of the day and then switch to a 10-15 min cardio cool-off to hit the fat stores.
Workouts should be limited to no more than 90 minutes total. Anyone that "lives" in the gym is actually doing a disservice to themselves.

Thank you :)
I think that having no carbs in your system when training also promotes extra growth hormone release as well. I love energy drinks before the gym, but I feel that more gH would be released without it.

When done properly, the Atkins diet WORKS. Now when I mean "properly"...that means you are supposed to include SOME carbs in your diet. 20-30 grams of carbs is the suggested amount. Sounds like some were overdoing it with absolutely NO carbs. Actually the loss of energy hits you in the 4th to 5th day of it..after that you regain your strength and its smooth sailing.
There are a couple of risks such as kidney disease and such but if you keep yourself well hydrated and you have no history of kidney issues you are at no risk.
The strict version of the Atkins diet is recommended for 1-2 months TOPS, no longer. (for as long as it takes for your body to reack "ketosis") After that the lifetime goal is to keep your carbs low, not completely non-existent. The issue is SUGAR..not carbs. The lifetime goal is to expell "bad sugars" from your diet..not carbs on a whole.

Actualy, the first 2 weeks ur suppose to put upto 20 grams of carbs.... The third week u start putting in upto 30 grams of carbs a day.... Theres also the lil things that u cant eat, that u think u would be able to eat like Tomatoes and Carrots... But overall this is the easiest diet I have ever been on, and I love it... Who ever is on it has got to try the 0 gram Atkens chocolate bars, or there 6 gram chocolate cake, or there 2 gram penut butter cups, they fucking taste great.....

Ketosis takes a few days to reach. So how would you reach that if you take in 20-30 carbs per day?

hi joey :buck
i have no clue how, but I did it. I reached ketosis on the 5th day of the diet while consuming UP to 20 grams of carbs a day..on an average I was ingesting about 15 grams I would say..and about 80% of that was before 12 noon. ;)
the diet can work for anyone, its just a matter of how much discipline you can take. its easy for some (like Mike) and difficult for others (like me..lol). I'm a veggie & carb person so it wasn't all that easy..BUT if you want quick results it is the best way to achieve them. Of course if you suddenly stop it, you will gain it all back..and probably have a bad stomach ache for a few days..you just flipped the script on your body in a HUGE way, what do you expect?? lol..if you continue on a low carb lifestyle, you will not gain substantial weight that you lost back again..and the MOST important factor of course..as ALWAYS is excercise. without it your metabolism will of course be sluggish. :TEETH

The worst part is stopping...Not only do u gain ur wieght back, but u gain it DOUBLE.... My mom who is more upto date with the book, told me that after a few months on this diet u must start increasing the amount carbs in ur body... I guess that makes u stay the way u are or something, cause aventualy everyone stops this diet, I have no clue when I am, but for now I think im gonna be on it for awhile, im liking the results... :)

Mike..just dont go binging on high carb foods, increase the amount of excercise you do if you happen to have a "carb overload" and you should be fine. You are supposed to follow a low carb diet for life, eat about 6-7 smaller meals a day to keep yuor metabolism working at a good speed, and be ACTIVE. It's very good for your cholesterol level and heart believe it or not...you give your metabolism no other choice but to burn fat ;)

I dont think I would be able to eat 6-7 smaller meals a day, I get full from one slim jim now... Oh and Mikey goes to the gym 4-5 times a week and I usualy jog there, cause I hate tredmills.... Thanks for the tip Eleni, I can use it to refresh my memory in the future... ;)
