The number of sets depends on you, but if you can do more than 20 reps per set you're doing them wrong.

I gotta disagree with that one Joey even though i seem to agree with a lot of what you write.

I do about 15 sets of different ab exercises but I always do more than 20 reps and I'm doing them properly
this is my rifle ... there are many like it, but this one is MINE!

I think it all depends what your doing. If you have resistance that one thing (and are doing them right). If you are just doing sit ups or crunches, I can see people going as hi as 70 to 100 reps per set.

i can do 100 crunches without breakig a sweat
with abs u have to go to exhaustion or failure i usually do 2 sets of 100 with about a minute break the ill do weight resistance on the machines
the key to machines is not coming up and resting always have ur abs tight never give them a break
abs shouldnt take longer then 10 mins if done right

If you knew how to squeeze your abs properly you wouldn't need 100 reps. You seem to be doing aerobics instead.

I see people with flat abs doing sets of 50, which are more what girls should be doing. Abs should be treated like any other muscle if you want them defined, besides the fact that they heal in a day because they're not skeletal muscle.

I totally disagree with the number of reps statment (20). I do agree that they should be treated like any other muscle, which most people dont treat them as and I think that they need more then one day to fully recover. I also think that doing abs with very hi reps is only going to make your abs even harder to get to the next level if they arent there, cause of muscle memory and what not.

They should be treated like other muscles in the sense of getting cut or big; abs are soft muscle compared to skeletal muscle and repair very quickly. You can work abs hardcore 5-6 days a week without problems. Hi reps usually leads to flat abs, while crunching very slow and hard for less reps makes them rip out like a true "six pack." I know many of you's disagree with Muscle & Fitness, but every guy in there does low, concentrated reps.

I never said to add resistance. Using weights makes them bulky.

that Italian body builder does a CRAZY Number of abs and his abs are sick. He does some ads for Hydroxycut and I think sometimes in the pics for Cell and Nitro Tech. I think its all about mixing it up and doing some resistance ab training as well as just core training.
