another Barcelona thread - i need hotel help please!

ok so i am about 90% locked/approved for a business trip to Barcelona for the week of Fourth of the July . and it seems that many of you on this board have been here.so i need hotel suggestions or at least what area/neighborhood to look in por favor!!

The trade show is at the Fira complex . but i dont need to neccessarily stay next to the convention center. i would rather stay in a hotel that is in the middle of great shopping, bars and nightclub area (ie.. nyc's equivalent of the meatpacking district, LES or Soho). but i dont want to a long commute in the morning (more than 30 minutes) is there such a thing?

also is the subway easy to navigate? how expensive are the cabs, etc?

I am really excited about going... except i think my boss is sending me by myself!

I live here and know where the Fira complex is......it's at plaza espanya. Anyway, cant really recommend any hotels - but if you stay somewhere around plaza catalunya or universitat, you'll be right by the red metro line which stops at plaza espanya (it's like 3 stops from there). the green line also goes to plaza espanya and you can catch it from plaza catalunya. You can stay along the ramblas, but just warning you that it can get very noisy in that area at night with drunken tourists. I wouldnt recommend staying in el raval either because that area is sketchy.....but the gotico section is ok.....noisy too, but not as sketchy as raval.

I am actually going to be in NY the week you are here, but my roomate will be around, so if you need someone to show you around the city at all or recommend some places to check out, let me know and I'll get you in contact.

I'd say it's even easier than the NY subways.....and if you are in the center, you can pretty much walk everywhere.....the city isnt that big, so when the weather is nice (which 99% of the time, it is), its really beautiful to walk around here. Just watch your ass - especially on la ramblas, raval, and el borne because purse snatching is a common occurance

Usually they bother women with huge purses and heels because they know it would be hard for women to run after them - not that you cant wear heels, but I've seen them target these kind of women the most

    Here's the subway website: tmb.es

I stayed in Hotel ARTS, and Hotel Hesperia Metropol (this one way more affordable). The Hesperia Metropol is an adorable boutique hotel. It's a perfect size and has a lot of the ammenities a larger hotel provides. It's right off Las Ramblas which is convenient.

Let me know if you need more recommendations.
