Military deaths down 50% from 2004...

    better news every month ..

US military deaths in Iraq lowest in 14 months

    Sep 30 09:04 AM US/Eastern

US military losses in Iraq for September stood at 70 on Sunday, the lowest monthly figure since July last year, according to an AFP tally based on Pentagon figures.
The figure also marks the fourth consecutive drop in the monthly death toll following a high of 121 in May. June saw 93 deaths, July 82 and August 79. The monthly toll in July 2006 was 53.

Two US soldiers were killed on Saturday in separate incidents, pushing the overall toll of American losses since the March 2003 invasion to 3,801.

A surge in US troop numbers saw an extra 28,500 personnel deployed from mid-February, mainly in Baghdad and the neighbouring province of Anbar, although commanders said most were not in combat positions until May.

US commanders say the strategy is starting to work and that levels of violence are dropping, allowing for a possible drawdown of the 160,000 or so troops now deployed.

"The trend is certainly in the right direction," US military spokesman Rear Admiral Mark Fox told a press conference in Baghdad.

"The surge unquestionably is what has been the catalyst that has created the opportunity to have more forces operating in more places at the same time and to deny Al-Qaeda and the extremists safe-haven and to take away sanctuaries."

The highest monthly toll was 137 in November 2004 when a US-led force stormed the insurgent bastion of Fallujah in fierce house-to-house fighting. Of the 137 dead, 126 were killed in action.

In April 2004, the second deadliest month since the invasion for US military personnel, 135 troops died. The month marked a turning point in the war with uprisings in Fallujah in the predominantly Sunni west, and in Shiite cities south of Baghdad.

still far too much for this horseshit cause. that's not counting all the horribly mutilated and injured who will live out their lives w/o limbs or in chronic pain with places like walter reed as their thanks.

costs of war aren't restricted to cash and death...marriages, lives, and bodies are torn apart.

I hear ya..1 death is too many ..when you send an additional 30k troops and cut the violence down by 50% thats just the facts ...from 137 to 70.. also take into account that sectarian violence has declined as well, People were brainwashed by the media and left that this war was lost! people need to realize petraeus is no rumsfeld!! his plan may actually work ..still to early to tell but all the trends since the surge started has exceeded everyone expectations

people were also brainwashed by the media that this war was a good idea, necessary, and was about wmd in iraq.

smart people have, and always will, look further than their nightly news for perspective. your very own petraeus has said his miltary, or any military alone cannot bring "sucess" to iraq. Until the politics pulls itself up and gets its act together, we're just putting a band aid on shit till we leave.

btw jamez, a lot of this is addressed on the last maher and it's not as biased as you think. it's on right now..started at 7, i suggest u watch

ill check mahrer on-demand i missed it.. to be honest i think the people who thought we went into iraq because of 9/11 and/or only for WMD were ill informed.. this war was because of resolution 1442, kicking out inspectors, WMD, oil for food scandal was making snactions non existent, he shot at our planes constantly, bragged he had WMD, and routinely ..for 12 years he continued this, even after clinton bombed him in 98 .. thats why 30 plus other nations went in with us..

who kicked out weapons inspectors? stop spreading BS lies...Hans Blix filed a full report on iraq's supposed WMD's...and i hate to sound like a broken record..even stated that iraq dismantled 12 SCUD's in a good faith gesture prior to the bombing
