Tuesday October 30, 9:22 am ETGoogle Expected to Launch Open-Software Phones by Next Year, Report Says NEW YORK (AP) -- Google Inc. is likely to announce its strategy for software and services for mobile phones within the next two weeks, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.The search engine leader plans to make applications and services -- including its search engine, mapping portal, YouTube and Gmail -- available through the devices, according to the newspaper. The phones would also have open software platforms, which would give independent software developers a chance to design their own phone features, the story said.
Google has reportedly sought partnerships with handset makers like Taiwan's HTC Corp. and South Korea's LG Electronics Inc., as well as wireless service providers such as Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile USA.
The Mountain View, Calif., company could not be immediately reached for comment Tuesday morning.
