Whats your opinion on why we cant find WOMD

As you know we still haven’t found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq , now do you think there are no weapons, and the Bush administration just made it up to invade Iraq?

Do you guys remember in a early this year the Israeli intelligence said that Iraq is moving all the weapons to Syria. We heard this for a day or two and it was not mentioned again till this week. I believe that the weapons were moved to either Syria or another country. This is my opinion, I know some might think there were none, I'm not saying that that’s not true, I just find it hard to believe that a regime as evil as it was would not have anything left.

They definitely did not make it up, but the intelligence that they used (the unclassified info anyway) was information from defected henchmen of Saddam and other information that led to the conclusion that Saddam was definitely planning on building a nuclear arsenal for use against western interests. The mission was pushed forward in haste due to a political timeframe (term limits) which turned the whole world to question our motives in the first place, and didn't allow ample time to build a solid case that Saddam was an imminent threat. I do agree that Saddam has friends in Syria and Iran (at least) and that they are now still holding Saddam's blueprint and resources for these weapons, if not the weapons themselves (a flame that continues to burn since the first Gulf War and before). If we don't stay in that region the flame will just pass on and continue to burn, and really I hope the next administration realizes this (if it's not Bush).

Since the end of the War in Iraq (and, in fact, long before it even started), one of the most critical -- and damaging, in the light of the Americans' failure to turn up any conclusive evidence of a banned weapons program in Iraq -- questions that opponents of the war have asked is "Where are the weapons of mass destruction?" Ion Mihai Pacepa, the former chief of Nicolae Ceausescu's intelligence services and "the highest-ranking intelligence officer ever to have defected from the former Soviet bloc" may have an answer:

The Soviet Union and all its bloc states always had a standard operating procedure for deep sixing weapons of mass destruction ? in Romanian it was codenamed "Sarindar, meaning "emergency exit..." It was for ridding Third World despots of all trace of their chemical weapons if the Western imperialists ever got near them. We wanted to make sure they would never be traced back to us...

Pacepa claims to have fairly intimate knowledge of how "Sarindar" works. After all, he implemented just such a plan on the behalf of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi:

The plan included an elaborate propaganda routine. Anyone accusing Moammar Gadhafi of possessing chemical weapons would be ridiculed. Lies, all lies! Come to Libya and see! Our Western left-wing organizations, like the World Peace Council, existed for sole purpose of spreading the propaganda we gave them. These very same groups bray the exact same themes to this day. We always relied on their expertise at organizing large street demonstrations in Western Europe over America's war-mongering whenever we wanted to distract world attention from the crimes of the vicious regimes we sponsored.

The similarities between the Sarindar plan described by Pacepa and the leadup to the War in Iraq don't end there, however. Yevgeny Primakov, who has been personally acquainted with Saddam Hussein since the 1960's and who allegedly helped Iraq build up it's arsenal (conventional and otherwise) was in Baghdad literally on the eve of war, along with two retired Russian generals, ostensibly to receive "honorary medals." Pacepa claims that he was likely there "cleaning up the loose ends" of Iraq's Sarindar plan just days before the outbreak of hostilities.

A further similarity is his mention of how chemical and biological weapons were generally destroyed in the event that a Sarindar was put into effect: burning or burial deep at sea. The second of these methods may raise the eyebrows on those who remember the three mysterious Iraqi freighters that we never really heard about again.

Many of the pieces, then, seem to fit. But that doesn't mean that there's no room for criticism. After all, it seems that the pieces fit almost too well. This could mean two things: either he's dead on, or he's taking advantage of his supposed "intimate knowledge" of KGB tactics to force-fit a broad set of Soviet protocols to the Iraq situation to make a political point.

But Ion Pacepa's explanation bears some consideration. The coincidences he points out may simply be coincidences. They may also be evidence of old Soviet Cold Warriors' untoward involvement in Iraq, a charge that is frequently leveled against American politicians such as Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. And given Saddam's penchant for burying military hardware, perhaps we shouldn't be so sure that a sealed up box of documents isn't sitting out there in the desert somewhere, waiting to be unearthed.

Interesting and does make sense, the only thing that I don’t understand is why all the Iraqi Scientists and others they interrogated in the past few months have been so tight lipped, I figure someone would talk. I guess maybe in time we'll know.
