Delta doubles second-bag fee to $50!!!!!

this is outrageous!!!!! defintely never gonna fly delta

ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation's third-largest carrier, will double its charge for checking a second bag on a domestic flight as part of a set of fee increases to help offset the high cost of fuel.

The Atlanta-based carrier said Tuesday that the changes will apply to customers who purchase a ticket on or after Thursday for travel on or after Aug. 5.

Fee changes include an increase from $25 to $50 to check a second bag for domestic travel. Fees for specialty items that require special handling, such as surfboards or ski equipment, will increase on domestic and international flights, Delta said.

First Class, BusinessElite and Medallion customers will still be able to check up to three bags at no charge, the airline said.

Delta said that as fuel costs remain high, it believes revising its fee structure for excess bags and specialty items is essential to generate the necessary revenues to offset its higher costs.

Delta currently does not charge passengers for checking a first bag on domestic flights. It has said it is studying a decision by several other major carriers to impose that fee.

Delta customers checking bags on international flights can check a first and second bag at no charge.

Fees are for each extra bag, each way.

The fee for checking a third bag on a domestic flight will increase from $80 to $125, while the fee for checking a bag that is between 51 and 70 pounds on a domestic flight will rise from $80 to $90. On any flight checking a bag that is 62 inches to 80 inches of the total of its length plus its width plus its height will rise from $150 to $175.

Delta warned on its Web site that if a customer has an extra piece of baggage that goes over the weight limit and the size limit, the passenger will be charged three times — once for the extra bag, once for going over the size limit and once for going over the weight limit.

The airline said it accepts up to 10 checked bags on Delta mainline flights and four checked bags on Delta Connection carriers.

It said a $175 charge per item applies to media representatives carrying camera, film, video tape, lighting, or sound equipment.

Delta announced April 14 that it will acquire Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest Airlines Corp. in a stock-swap deal that would create the world's largest carrier in terms of traffic. The deal is subject to shareholder and regulatory approval.

so let me get this straight, they get to jack everything up in price to "offset rising fuel costs" ie: their expenses needed to maintain business, while we have to absorb the rising fuel costs, food costs, and everything else they entail.

what exactly is the consumer supposed to do to "offset" rising costs of basic needs? there's only so much you can do, some peopl eneed to drive, need to travel for work, etc. and they can't raise their income to "offset" the difference. ugh. the nerve.

It must be nice to mismanage your business (as the airlines have) and have the option of writing off your mistakes through customers' pockets.

Two of the three largest U.S. airlines reported sharply higher losses in the latest quarter on rising fuel bill and mounting charges of reducing staff and grounding airplanes. AMR, the parent of American Air reported second quarter loss fo $1.45 billion as revenue rose 5.1% to $6.18 billion. Fuel bill jumped by $838 million from a year ago quarter. Separately, Delta Air Lines reported second quarter loss of $1.04 billion on revenue rise of 10% to $5.5 billion.

1:10PM New York – Two of the three largest U.S. airlines reported sharply higher losses as fuel price jump more than 80% from a year ago and companies take charge on eliminating staff and grounding airplanes.

The current woes of the airlines industry was at a stark display in the latest quarterly earnings from Delta Air Lines and AMR, the parent of American Airlines. Rapid and steep rise in fuel cost with a growing reluctance of consumers to pay higher fares are driving losses at two airlines to record highs.

The key question is what happens to air traffic after summer holidays are over and how will airlines cope if fuel prices remain at current elevated level. The airlines are increasing their ‘other revenue’ and ‘passenger fees’ by charging for checked baggage for in-flight food and drinks but are quickly running out of options to find additional revenue sources.

AMR Corporation, the parent company of American Airlines revenue for second quarter rose 5.1% to $6.18 billion compared to $5.88 billion a year ago. Net loss was $1.4 billion or $5.77 per diluted share compare to a net profit of $317 million or $1.08 per diluted share for the second quarter of 2007.

Excluding one-time charges to ground planes and eliminate staff, the quarterly loss would have been $284 million. American's mainline load factor or the percentage of total seats filled was 82.5% during the second quarter, compared to 83.6% in the second quarter of 2007. AMR plans to retire its entire fleet of 34 A300 aircrafts by the end of 2009.

High fuel prices affects the results of AMR, company paid $838 million more for fuel in the second quarter of 2008. The airline paid $2.42 billion for the fuel in the quarter or $3.19 a gallon of jet fuel compared to $1.64 a gallon in the quarter a year ago.

While the cost of jet fuel remains very volatile, AMR is planning for an average system price of $3.81 per gallon in the third quarter of 2008 and $3.42 a gallon for all of 2008, a substantial increase from a year ago.

AMR expects the previously announced sale of American Beacon Advisors, Inc. valued at $480 million in total consideration, to be completed in the third quarter of 2008.

AMR Corporation (AMR: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $29.32 in July 2007 and as low as $4.00 in July 2008. Based on the yesterday's closing price the company has a market cap of $ 1.21 billion.

Delta Air Lines, Inc., an air carrier today reported results for the quarter ended June 30, 2008 revenue increased 10% to $5.5 billion compared to $5 billion a year ago. Net loss for the June 2008 quarter was $1.04 billion or $2.64 per diluted share compared to a profit of $1.59 billion a year ago.

Excluding one-time charges Delta would have earned $137 million in the quarter. Delta says that it has access to $4.3 billion in ‘unrestricted liquidity’ from its lender and additional $1.3 billion through its revolving credit facility.

The airline took a goodwill charge of $1.1 billion and $102 million for employee buyout in the quarter. Delta will lower its capacity by 13% by the end of the year and ground 20 large planes and 100 regional planes after the summer season.

Delta plans to reduce its domestic capacity by 13% and increase its international capacity by 14% and cut its overall capacity by 4% in the second half of this year.

Delta hedged just under half of its fuel needs in the second quarter with average fuel cost of $3.13 a gallon compared to $2.09 a gallon. Delta realized $313 million in gains on fuel hedge contracts settled in the quarter.

Delta exited the bankruptcy court last year with goodwill asset of $12.3 billion and wrote down nearly half of the asset in the first quarter earnings.

Delta’s merger with Northwest Airlines is targeted to close during the fourth quarter of 2008 and expects to save $2 billion annual cost by 2012 but will spend $600 million in cash over the next three years to integrate two airlines.

Delta Air Lines, Inc. (DAL: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $21.80 in July 2007 and as low as $4.00 in July 2008. Based on the yesterday's closing price the company has a market cap of $ 1.56 billion.

why do you assume they're only losing $ b/c of rising fuel costs? airlines are typically horribly managed. their system is flawed completely. you think they weren't on shaky ground BEFORE fuel skyrocketed?

why is it companies don't have to take responsibility for the poor business practices and choices that got them into such precarious situations, but individual citizens get SLAMMED for not being 100% perfect regarding their financial situation?

people seem much more forgiving of big business' fuckups, the gov't too. wonder why that is.

where did anyone say it's anyone's "right" to travel?
and where did I say people can't "afford" airfare?

i said some people MUST travel for work, not talking about people who think vacations are a "must", and they have no recourse when ALL carriers impose the same hiked fees. they don't have infinite air travel options, they are subject to whatever the airlines impose.

the airlines on the other hand, can raise fees as they like to offset their increases in cost. so their costs can be offset by raising prices, but how does the customer offset their rising costs? they can't choose a cheaper airline, they all have these fees apparently. they can't walk when they need to fly, or drive across oceans for christ's sake.

nobody's CRYING benny, jesus, can't you look past your "i think everyone's whining" nonsense long enough to see the point that corporations and companies get bailouts, and aid, where customers get left holding the bag?

you think it's ok for a company to manage their money poorly and then pass the difference off to customers raising prices, but it's not ok for people to manage their money poorly and ask for help? it's a contradiction.

and i see you're reading my posts lol
