I have Yamaha MSP5s and love them. I think eventually I'll get 8" speakers though. Maybe the Yamaha HSM80s. It's more important to know what it needs to sound like on whatever monitors you use to get a good sound than just buying expensive monitors that are supposed to be good.

I mean if you know what you need the track to sound like in your home studio for it to sound good in a club you're good. It doesn't matter what speakers you have as long as you know how it translates.

Also I would rather put the extra money you'd (general you, not you specifically) spend on monitors towards something else like a synth, hardware compressor or external mixer. I'd prefer to do the final mixdown somewhere else with someone with better ears and then you send it off for mastering anyway.

i didnt bother to read everyones reply, but i have a pair of dynaudio bm12a - they are about as accurate and as "true" as you can get, they're not the loudest monitors on the earth, but a few friends of mine have had really loud monitors, and when u play them on something else it sounds like complete crap

basically, when you mix a track down on the dynaudios, it will sound the same on those as it would in your car, ipod, other speakers, club, etc - does at least for me

I went out to B&H to hear alot of monitors here are my opinions

    - Yamaha HS-80M = Bass Heavy, Over-Compensated Mids, Harsh Highs

    - Yamaha HS-50M = Sounded Okay would sound much better with the HS10M Sub

    - Tannoy Reveals = Extremely good to the price point pretty damn accurate

    - Dynaudio BM5a MK2s = Very good overall sounding monitor (probably scooping this one up or the Tannoys )

    - Adam monitors = sounded good the highs are different due to a ribbon tweeter they say it reduces ear fatigue but it sounds a bit different

    - Focals CMS 50 & 65 = I heard alot about these and people rant and rave about them but for me they werent nothing special

The monitors that sounded the absolute best in my opinion were the Dynaudio BM6A and im sure the BM12As would also sound good.

I wanted to listen to the Genelecs they didnt have them hooked up

I heard the same thing when I heard them I was quite surprised definitely not a flat response since its a 8in monitor it puts out more lows then the HS50ms and the highs are harsh. I feel like the 50s with the 10 sub would be better this way you can see how it sounds with less low end and with low end and control the sound.

But in my opinion the best monitor you can get for your money is the Tannoy Reveals $300 for the pair they sound great. The person that helped me out at B&H also agreed with me. The other two Dynaudios I mentioned sounded PERFECT.

Best thing to do is check them out yourself but I feel like my reviews were pretty accurate. Im probably gunna scoop up the Tannoys now and then when I save up the money scoop up the Dynaudios and either sell the Tannoys or Ill most likely end up using them as a secondary monitor

Focal makes pretty good Raw drivers, just not very good speakers .......

They picked up where Dynaudio left off when they stopped selling individual raw drivers to other manufactures..

The hs80s are my 3 rd set of monitors in a month. I first heard them against others at the store.....i didn't even give them a second play...others sounded a lot better. My first set sounded flawless but after using them for a couple of days i found they didn't translate
well and were not accurate at all. I then went with another brand only to find the same thing...flawless sound but the mix was way off on other systems.I asked around a lot... and many people told me to go with the hs80's... i wouldn't be sorry. I found them online for $500 almost half of what i spend on the last set. I couldn't be happier....most important my mix is on and the sound is good. I was going to go with a sub also and at this point i find no need to ......very happy i went with these...for my ears they were the best choice.

I scooped them up last night sound great.. I have the Reveals 501A (A = Active..they have Passive ones too so make sure its and A)

If you wanna spend 500 and get a bigger woofer they have the 601A

BTW get the Auralex pads to put under them for better angling and its better for the sound

I dunno man. I know a bunch of producers that use and swear by Focals. Also - mixing engineers. Those are on my list now, but not the CMS ones. The Solos.
