    Dogs and Hip Problems...

So just when I thought my dog was finally recovering from ACL knee surgery, it now seems she may have a problem with her hip.. (Came out of nowhere) She is 8 years old 35 pounds mix breed so I highly doubt its from old age. Anyways, the specialist I saw prescribed Rimadyl (anti inflammatory) for a week to see if that does any good for her....If the hip pain doesn't go away he will follow through with x-rays etc.... She wont climb steps or even jump up on curbs right now.... Has anybody experienced these type of symptoms with their dog... What type of recovery / treatment did you get your dog... Thanks in advance.. Really hope I don't have to get another surgery. The first one was rough....

Yes I have been given my dog glucosamine chondrotin biscuits helps and his weight down ..he not in pain anymore (he was when he was heavier before i put him on diet) ... if i notice pain i get the same meds you get from the vet but since i put him on diet he not in pain he can run, jump up on bed etc.. there were times he would just sit down in middle of a walk ..this was due to my mom spoiling the fuck outta him and feeding him like a king .. The problem is these hip disease are usually degenerative so you gotta get him xrayed if he in pain .. im doing everything i can to avoid surgery .. Old fart & grey ho recommeneded someone really good but your down in maryland ..my dog is westie terrier

ive recently switched my dogs over to CORE wellness food, and they all lost a considerable amount of weight. its beasically a grain free diet, (dogs in the wilderness don't eat grains ever they eat other animals/ meat) its done impressive stuff for their coats, body fat, but also my oldest guy who is 8 and was getting chunky moves so much more fluidly and lately all he wants to do is run! if you do buy it ease it into their current food my trainer told me aobut the food and it works like a charm, just that their digestive tract takes a bit of time to adapt, if you just switch quick you may get some not so nice presents.

glucosamine is good, also any type of fish food (salmon) the oil is a lubricant for the joints.

Thanks... similar situation with my dog... she will just stop in the middle of the walk....Shes not that heavy but she could definitely lose a few pounds...Mix breed terrier (35 pounds). She is in NJ right now with my parents... I'm Going back and forth between here and Maryland...I have glucosamine pills that I will start giving her twice a day with fish oil.....Hopefully things get better.... This honestly came out of nowhere.. I thought it was related to her knee. Did your dogs leg shake when he put weight on it? My dog's tail has also been between her legs recently which I believe is from the pain....Last week all she wanted to do was run, this week she has no interest in walking... As for food we give primal which is similar to core.. Kept in the freezer....

It shook when he was heavy and it still does with the weight off .. only if he is sitting up, taking a shit or pissing (yeah when he puts his weight on it ) it shakes bad... when he is laying down, walking, running ..no shaking if he is just standing on all four his rear leg doesnt shake that bad

Dude I swear where do you come up with this shit. There are many options for dogs with hip problems. I guess we can add vet tech along with your vast nutrition knowledge.

I would get xrays done to know where you stand. There are options for hip dysplasia but they are super expensive. My dog needs a trh. Probably getting done when he is 6 because the replacement hip is usually good for 8-10 years

I really hope its not hip dysplasia but all of the side effects seem to match.....I read depending on the severity you can sometimes avoid surgery. Can hip dysplasia come from jumping off a bed or is it only hereditary? Your dog has hip dysplasia as well? Can he go up stairs?

My dog should be able to jump over a 4 foot fence but he cant. We let him on the bed sometimes and if he doesnt getting a running start I usually have to pick his back legs. He wants to run every where but we avoid stairs. Stairs are terrible for dogs. If your breed is prone to HD the first couple of years of their life you are supposed to avoid jumping off anything over a couple of feet. No jogging with your dog and try not to over work them which is so freaking hard because all they want to do is play. My dogs hips were perfect up until 9 months and then the right one was rotating with a click. Had xrays done and showed it was displaced. Because I have lived in NYC (apartments) for 4/5 years of his life his exercises mainly comes from his walks. I take him a couple of times a week to the park and throw the ball but nothing crazy. He is in pain sometimes but he always wants to play. I just want to make sure I only have to do this once.

If your dog is running like a bunny meaning the two back legs are pushing out together your pet his HD. IF they are pushing up with the front of their body when they get up it is a sign also. A TRH does not mean the end of the world for your pet. Most of them bounce back so great (this is what I read) and usually can do more physically with the hip. Going under is the tough part on animals. $5000 for TRH

Just an update, it turns out not to be the hip after all. She has a bulging disk in her spine. I believe the bone may be hitting the nerve which causes her pain. The vet said no surgery is needed at this time, just rimadyl and rest for a few weeks should help the problem... Surgery in the future is a possibility if it gets much worse but he didn't seem it was necessary for a while if ever. She is a long dog which could put added pressure on that spot where the nerve is...Hopefully rest and a diet will help her out... Thanks for the advice,
